Plymouth, MA: 2 young pigs found in woods
I want to help out as well, but I really need to stay put for a while. Been on the road/away from home all summer, with 2-5 day breaks in between. My brain, home, and dependants (child and animals) need some stability.
I can foster the peegs if mmeadow and I can meet at the Cracker barrel someday (we've done it before). I have plenty of space for them. Then I can plan a trip up to Lebanon to meet LGoodrum again, on a day that we are rested and excited about the drive.
I love to drive, but I'm super tired, bordering on dizzy and dangerous right now. I'll do the best I can.

Thanks! These last few days have been great! I feel a ton better! I love driving and love helping people and pigs. I do what i love andalways within my limits. Because, YES! An avoidable accident wouldnt do anyone any good.
Always stay within your limits!
Well, will say some prayers for these little girls and hope they are safe and with people who can handle whatever comes up.
Maybe some prayers too that the people will find GL, or are already GL'ers...

I picked them up Monday. Two sows maybe 4-5 months old (~750 grams) and a sow and boar maybe 2 months old (~450 grams). I suspect they are full sibs from back-to-back litters. It's been 5 years since we had young'uns here and they surely are lively! They were all in the same cage so the girls are all on watch--he's a wee baby boar but you never know.
My daughter is demanding that we keep them all because they are such cuddle bugs.

It was lucky the shelter held them for me to arrive and re-sex them, because the would-be adopter of the two "boys" was waiting. They were disappointed but I heard they found two males at another shelter.
In a moment of inspiration I had pulled on one of my Cavy Madness T shirts before leaving. I think it lent me extra credibility when I explained I was part of the rescue network.
My printer was busted but I will mail some GL care guides and link.

Ooh! Does this mean they'll make an appearance at the Boston pignic! Joy!

Cream Puff, the light-colored pig in the first and third photos, seemed fine on Wednesday night, happily eating evening lettuce. Thursday morning she was cold and lethargic and by late afternoon (at the vet) she was gone. She was only 2 1/2. I think it's the first time we've lost a young one so suddenly. The vet didn't find anything obvious, even with an ultrasound, but we didn't have the heart for an autopsy. We're kind of stunned.

mmeadow, that stinks. What a shock to lose one that young! I'm sorry.

Godspeed and safe passage, Cream Puff. You will be remembered, honored and loved.
mmeadow -- I strongly suspect she had some serious genetic abnormalities. I think many of us would agree that we're seeing pigs that are weaker and have more problems inherent coming with them than we have in years past, much less whatever may have happened to them before you got them.
Know that her time here was wonderful thanks to you and everyone else that helped her. That counts.

Could well be genetic. Cream Puff's littermate Bo (back of first photo) already had a bladder stone at age 2; amazingly, he passed it without surgery. Rosie is obese, and has a growth on her lip at which the vets just shrug. The growth doesn't bother her--sure doesn't keep her from eating!--which is good because I don't think it's operable. So far no issues with Pepper. I'm somewhat regretful about not getting an autopsy, but we'll compensate by extra vigilance with the other three.
mmeadow- I'm so sorry, hun. That's so sad.
I agree that we are seeing a lot more pigs come with mysterious conditions we know nothing about. The past year has been hard with most of the losses being what I would consider, too soon. It is likely they have trashy genetics.
The one "old age" loss was the exception this year. Most of the others were 6 months to 2 years.
Granted I had pneumonia wipe out a load of them at one time and the vet said it can happen pretty fast. But many of them were just mysteries. I didn't do autopsies mostly because it was just too overwhelming....
