Soft poop-please help

Brenda, I have not forgotten about you, I am waiting for my vet to call me back :) They looked at her file real quick and said there was so many things they tried she could not make heads or tails of the vet's notes so the vet herself is going to return my call. Hopefully she can remember what her notes say. It has been about two years ago since I have gone through all of this with Sidney like you are your piggie.
If it is the piggie in your avator we are discussing, my Sidney even looks a lot like her.

Yes, Weaver it is the pig in my avatar. I also posted some more photos of her (and my other 2) on Cavy Chat-title "photos of my herd" (not sure how to put in a link)
So, today she still has normal poops...this is really the longest she has gone without mush. I think that the key this time is the flagyl with the albon....she had 3 weeks on albon when I first got her and never cleared it up entirely.
I have been giving very small amounts of spring greens as her only veg source. Plus vit c and as much timothy hay as she can handle (got a huge bale from the local feed supply).
Any suggestions of other veggies for pigs with poop troubles would be helpful. She is begging me constantly. :)
She seems happier now too...comes to see me every time I go to the cage...

ok, so I read a thread about the Martinez pigs having giardia. This is a stretch, but this pig came from a shelter in Lancaster, CA and I got her from TBB. Perhaps she could be one of those pigs???
It seems like the flagyl is helping...could she have giardia. If so, would not my other 2 have it also since it is highly contagious?
Final question, how long do you treat a pig for giradia with flagyl? I go back to the vet after one week...should we keep her on for 1-2 more???

Ok, I talked to my vet today and Sidney was on albon for a while, and that showed no improvement. Flagyl is what cured her and she was on it for ten days. She was also on a probotic during that time to help settle her stomach and try to keep her flora healthy.
Pigs that have soft stools, get messed up flora, especially if they are also on meds during that time. Make sure you religiously give a probotic during this time.
Only feed hay, pellets, and VERY limited greens. I would not feed any extras. I do recommend hand feeding critical care if you are currently not doing so.
The flagyl took sometime to work so be patient. Just make sure you keep her regular diet simple. Lots of hay!
I also wanted to add that whatever Sidney had (we never found out for sure), was contagious and she gave it to several other pigs that I had that she was housed with. They were cured in no time, but she took a while to get better. I would leave your piggie by herself and do strict quarentine to get to the bottom of this.

Thanks Weaver!
I think that the flagyl is making a difference. She had some soft ones today but not near what they were. And they are now back to being good again. She has been on it since Sunday.
She has maintained her weight and is eating oxbow pellets, lots of fresh timothy hay and some orchard grass. I do not have any critical care...does she need it if she is eating well and staying at the same weight?
She actually climbed up into the hay rack tonight...has not done that in some time. She seems like she feels better. I will ask doc to give us enough flagyl to continue 10 days. I only got 7 last week.
I give her poop soup 2 hours after every dose of meds. Is that good enough or do you suggest another probiotic as well? I add vit c with the poop soup too.
I puller her out of the cage when she showed signs of illness...so far the other 2 have not. Not sure what this is nor an incubation period so keeping fingers crossed! :)

I personally would give her the Cirtical Care if you can easily get it, and that also has a built in probiotic.
My vet had given me a probiotic to sprinkle on a leaf of lettuce right after she took her meds. It was in a powder form. Maybe you could ask your vet if they have anything like that..?
My vet said to try and get your pig to eat right after taking the meds because the medicine itself can also cause an upset stomach.
Hopefully she will continue to keep improving.
