I had taken all my piggies to a vet today because all of them had few issues. There are no exotic animals vets here (India) but few people had recommended this vet, so I gave it a try.

Cupid- His abscess healed nicely but the hair and the skin never grew back in that area but the opening has shut. He has been eating, pooping and acting normally.
The vet has prescribed Pendistin ointment to be applied to that area twice a day. He said that this ointment is safe even if ingested.
1. Can I use this ointment on him?

Prince- He has been scratching a lot since two days and today I saw a bald patch on his leg. He is experiencing hair loss with dandruff/dead skin flakes at the end. I also noticed something brown on his skin at the start of the hair, he doesn't allow to touch probably and has been restless since yesterday. He is eating less since morning and mostly resting.
The vet said that it is fungal infection and told me to use a damp cloth dipped in betadine solution and to wipe Prince with it all over his body backward and forward. He ruled out the option of mites and said that guinea pigs should never be treated with ivermectin since it is not safe (Problem of finding an exotics vet in India)
2. Is the vet correct with Prince's diagnosis?

Sandy- He is having a problem with chewing and hasnt eaten much since last night. He ate a little on his own right now. He makes weird mouth movements and uses his paw a lot as if trying to clean his mouth.
The vet said not to worry about the mouth as long as he is eating. He also said that he has worms in his stomach and that is why his coat looks rough and dull. He has prescribed Mutrolin-B three drops twice a day for three days and then after a gap of two days he told me to give Albendazole.
3. Is the vet correct with Sandy's diagnosis?
4. Can I give Sandy the medications and the dosage prescribed?

I would be highly grateful to any kind of help and suggestions.

I was unable to find out what the active ingredients are in Pendistin. Are they listed on the tube? Could you post them here?

Mites and fungus are both quite common. And your guinea pig could have both.

Pendistrin SH Cream is an ointment used in treatment of mastitis. Its ingredients are dangerous for guinea pigs if swallowed, beacuse one of them is penicillin!

Composition
Each tube contains :
Procaine Penicillin G : 1,00,000 units
Streptomycin sulphate I.P.: 100 mg
Sulphamerazine B.P.(Vet) : 500 mg
Hydrocortisone : 20 mg

Fungal infections in guinea pigs can be treated with the same creams people use, for example Clotrimazolum. Washing guinea pigs accessories in water with vinegar also helps. Acidic environment inhibits fungus growth. Don't forget to wash your own hands, because humans can get fungal infections from animals.
Ivermectin is actually dangerous only for certain types of dogs, but can be safely used for cattle and horses. While it is not listed as a medication recommended for guinea pigs, in proper doses it is safe.

Streptomycin is also in the penicillin family and dangerous. Thanks for tracking down this info, Kimera (I couldn't find it online).

Thank you Lynx and Kimera.

Yes, Kimera is right. Pendistrin-SH contains all the ingredients mentioned by her. Thank you once again.
Even this vet is hopeless then. When will I ever find a good exotic specialist in India :(

The other medicines prescribed and its composition are below:

Nutrolin B syrup-
Each 5 ml (after reconstitution) contains
Lactic acid bacillus : 40 × 10 Spores
Pyridoxine Hydrochloride IP : 1.5 mg
Nicotinamide IP : 20 mg

Albendazole Oral suspension USP-
Each ml contains
Albendazole IP (Micronised) : 25 mg

Are the above medicines safe for my piggies?

Not paying heed to the vet's advice, I have purchased Ivermectin Oral Solution 0.08% W/V.
Composition:
Each ml contains
Ivermectin IP : 0.8 mg
Benzyl Alcohol IP (as preservative) : 0.02 ml

Can I use this solution topically?
How much should I give?
Should the cleaning and the disinfecting start before or after the first dosage?

I am giving Ivermectin to my piggies first time, so I am a little scared. Request you to please help.

Nutrolin is OK, it is a probiotic and vitamins B, used with antibiotic therapy.
Albendazole and Ivermectin are both antiparasitics, so they shouldn't be used at the same time. They are both used for treating specific problems of guinea pigs, and are considered safe - as long as they are used in proper doses and for correct health problems. Usually a competent veterinarian makes the diagnosis and administers the correct doses of medications. I have never needed to do it myself, so I can't help you there. maybe someone else can tell you more.

I weighed the piggies and also changed the oral ivermectin with the injectable ivermectin since it is better. Its a 10ml bottle and its composition is:
Each ml contains
Ivermectin IP : 10mg
Benzyl Alcohol IP (as preservative) : 15mg
Propylene glycol IP : q.s.

Cupid's weight- 975 grams (0.975 kg)
Sandy's weight- 950 grams (0.95 kg)
Prince's weight- 850 grams (0.85 kg)

Request you to please help with the dosage of ivermectin to my piggies since this would be the first time that I will be using it and I dont want to overdose them.

I plan to give them the first dose tonite and wash their bedding in hot water with bleach and detergent from tomorrow. Also sanitise the cage with vinegar and water.
Is there anything more I have to do for mites treatment?

Will you do topical?

See www.guinealynx.info/_ivermectin.html

There is a chart. You'll be pretty close if you figure 1 kg and 0.9 kg.

Yes, I will be treating them topically. Will I have to dilute ivermectin then?

Lynx, as per the chart Cupid and Sandy will be dosed somewhere between 0.045 and 0.05, say 0.046 cc approximately and Prince will be dozed between 0.04 and 0.045, say 0.041 cc approximately (correct me if I am wrong as I am very bad at maths).

I am also confused with the concentration of ivermectin in the composition I mentioned and how to work around that. I had seen a chart somewhere here which calculates the dosage taking into account the concentration of ivermectin and the weight of the guinea pig automatically and manually but I cant find it now.

How do I take this dosage on a 1 cc syringe?

Oh God!! I am more confused now. Help please :(

You are looking for the dose calculator, I think. It is there: https://www.guinealynx.info/dose_calculator.html

The key is the title of the page I sent you to is:

Guinea Lynx' TOPICAL IVERMECTIN TREATMENT FOR GUINEA PIGS @ 0.5mg/kg
USING IVOMEC INJECTION 1.0% SOLUTION

You got Ivermectin IP : 10mg.
That is the 1% solution.

So you can use the guidelines on that page.

I would not concern yourself too closely on getting it correct to such a small decimal point. You will find when it comes time to measure, you can't do it that accurately. Just do the best you can using a 1cc syringe.
