Thank you for your messages. More than being sad, I am happy that Princy is free from all her sufferings. I cannot forget her face when she lay still in her carrier basket. She looked so peaceful and I know she is happy and popcorning on the other side.

Princy was the one who was the most cooperative and calmest among others. She never tried to scratch or bite me when I gave her a bath. trimmed her nails or even force feed her during her last days. I have never had a tough time with her. I am lucky to have been her slave.
I really miss you Princy and will always do. :(

I am sorry that I was not too active on the forum due to studies, work and other things. Also after Angel's death, my other babies dint really give me a chance to visit the forum so much as they were in good health by God's grace.

I lost Angel after 4 months of Princy's death. She was all fine in the morning when I left for office, eating and pooping normally, but later in the afternoon my mom called to say that she lay still in her cage and have passed away. I still don't understand what happened to her.

I got new buddies for Prince named Cupid and Sandy. The breeder had said that they were approximately a year old. Prince clicked with Sandy a little but dint click with Cupid at all. I had tried to make them friends a few more times but I guess Prince preferred to stay as a boss and stay alone. He is happy though.

Few days back, I noticed a boil kind of a thing on Cupid's back. I started calling all the vets I was recommended and short listed one (There are problems finding a guinea pig specialist in India).
I took him to the vet today and he said its abscess. I had doubted that and had read little on the forum before visiting him. The vet made a cut on the abscess to remove the puss and dead tissues without anaesthesia.

After surgery, he told me to wipe out the excess Betadine solution from Cupid's body with lukewarm water, which I did, though Cupid dint allow me to dry him properly. The vet told me to clean him with the solution twice in a day and apply Pendistrin-SH inside the cut and give him Amoxycillin oral suspension-Mox Redimix.
I read the contents on the ointment and suspension and saw Penicillin on it. I dint give him any dose after seeing this. But I am worried because the vet used the ointment on him after surgery :(

Cupid asked for food after 15 minutes of the surgery and ate coriander and few slices of cucumber after coming home. A good sign though. But now he is only sleeping, I guess its paining a lot to him. Should I be worried?

Also which antibiotics and probitics should I give him?
Should I clean him only with the Betadine solution or something else also?

I am sorry for a longer thread but please help. Any help and advice would be appreciated.

I forgot to mention that the vet has kept the wound open. Should that be the case?
I have kept Cupid separately so that his cagemates don't bother him or the wound.

Can I give him Metcam or Rimadyl for pain relief, since he has stopped squeaking after the surgery and he is in pain? What should be the dose and frequency?

I have been reading on post operation care and I have a few more questions:
1. Should I keep a wrapped hot water bottle in his cage?
2. Should I give him Vitamin C tablets? If yes, which brand tablet and what should be the quantity?
3. Should I give him Pedialyte? How often should I give him?
4. We don't get Critical Care in India. Can I give him baby food,if he stops eating?

For the pain, metacam and rimadyl are both ok to give, but not at the same time. I've used both in the past, but I'm not good at working out doses.

https://www.guinealynx.info/analgesics.html

For handfeeding, crush some of his pellets and mix it with water to form a slurry and handfeed that. Baby food alone won't have anywhere near enough fibre in it to keep his gut moving.

I'm sorry I can't offer more advice. Someone with more experience will be online soon to help.

I'm at work just now but:

1) Abscess wounds should be kept open so that the puss can continue to drain. If they are closed they can fill up and need lanced (cut open) again.
2) You can give Metacam for pain relief - general dose is 0.2mls twice a day for short term use (three days is short term, I'd class a week as long term) not squeeking after surgery isn't necessarily a sign of pain. Read this for pain signs: https://www.guinealynx.info/pain.html
3) You want to offer him a water bottle wrapped up in a towel. Set him beside it so he can choose to lie on the hot water bottle or get off it. Post op he'll have difficulty regulating his temperature - keep him away from draughts but also let him escape the heat.
4) Vitamin C tablets are often supplimented by those who feel the diet they give their pigs doesn't contain enough vitamin C and some give them through illnesses. You can give him a vitamin C tablet - you want, from a pharmacy or health food store - PLAIN vitamin C tablets with no additives. It's not necessary and you can offer vegetables high in vitamin C instead.

Is he eating by himself yet?

Hand feeding is best done with a pellet mush if you don't have critical care. Soak his dry food in water and then blend or mush it into a paste and syringe into his mouth. You would offer pedialyte if he isn't drinking himself or if you're hand feeding. I tend to offer a syringe of food, a syringe of water because you need both to go through a guinea pigs gut to keep them healthy when they are not eating.

Amoxycillin oral suspension-Mox Redimix.
- is this being given orally or into the wound? If oral please stop now, penicillin is not good for pigs!

When I have flushed out abscesses I have not used an antibiotic to flush (like penicillin) I will get the name of the solution we are using to flush the abscess when home (in 5 hours).

Normal for pig to be sleeping a lot after an operation. How long has it been? Try to rouse him every four hours to encourage him to eat. If he doesn't eat on his own, syringe food and water into him.

Please excuse how broken up my messages are. At work and you seem to be quite worried so I wanted to respond quickly.

Jessie- Cupid isn't pooping much and I saw him eating his soft poops a little.

NoCableisSafe-Metcam or Rimadyl are not available in India. Here is the list of medicines available, see if you can suggest from this:

Pain killers- Vovran, Diclogen, Carprofen, Melenex
Antibiotics- Bactrim DS, Ampoxin, Lixen, Cefpet
Probiotics- Vivact, Prepro, Bifilac, Gutwell

Is it necessary to give pain killers?

Also should I soak a cotton in Betadine solution and clean the wound or take it in a syringe and flush it in the wound and then rinse with water?

Carprofen is Rimadyl.

Bactrim is safe for use in pigs (I've used it lots, it's called Septrin here).

For the probiotics, I'm not sure.

When I said crush pellets, I meant his dried food pellets. Make it into a powder, mix with water and syringe feed.

If you don't have any dried food that would work, do you have a food blender? You could take the hay crumbs from the bottom of the bag and chop them down into a powder and use that as a syringe feed mix.

Jessie- Thank you so much for the information. I just got back from the vet to change the penicillin drugs he had given. He said not to use a pain killer. He has prescribed the following drugs now:

Antibiotic- Septran.
Is this the one you are talking about? Its a Co-trimoxazole Oral suspension and Paediatric suspension. The vet has told me to give him three drops twice a day for five days and sprinkle it on the food. But Cupid is not eating that food now. Can I give him directly in his mouth? Is the dosage enough?

Probiotic- Digyton.
Five drops twice in a day for seven days and again sprinkle on the food. Can I use this? Is the dosage correct?

Amino acids and multi vitamins drops- Verol drops.
Five drops twice a day. He said I can use this on a daily basis even after the wound is heeled.

Ointment- Staphban.
Its Mupirocin ointment USP, 2%
Can I use this?

Also can someone please help with the Betadine solution flushing like how much quantity and how many times a day.
