Fighting to Save Samoa's Eye:
Hi pig lovers! Luckily I have not needed to get on here to seek medical advice until now but my 18 month old pig, Samoa, has a very sore eye. I noticed her right eye slightly squinted on Thursday, but could not see anything out of the ordinary (no cloudiness or discharge) and decided to wait and monitor (absolute MISTAKE). By Friday evening it was cloudy with some blood and the cornea appeared to be ulcerating. I sent pictures to their vet and he was very concerned and thankfully made time Saturday evening to see her. By Saturday her poor eye looked horrible and very sore. My vet agreed it was a nasty corneal ulcer, but does not think the eye is ruptured (I trust him but her eye looks very similar to some piggies with ruptured eyes that needed to be removed that I have seen on here). He prescribed ciprofloxacin ophthalmic drops which were started Saturday night (1 drop every 6 hours). After seeing the eye getting worse today he prescribed erythromycin ointment. I was curious as to whether anyone else on here had been prescribed erythro for an eye injury as I have not seen it in any threads I've read. I was also wondering if anyone has used cipro drops with another antibiotic ointment or if most of the time it is better to just use one or the other. I am hoping the ointment will work much better than the drops-- I am not entirely convinced that the drops even stayed in to treat the eye for more than a couple minutes. Luckily she is eating well and happily sassing me through all this.

Yes, the cream should work better. Would you like me to add your clearer photos to your thread permanently for future readers?

It looks like you are doing things right. Your vet is very responsive to your concerns.

Thanks! Here you go then. These are the second through last, in order. I see what you mean about worrying about a rupture but the picture we have here was much worse. Fortunately, I think the eye also healed.

Hello!

My piggy has the exact same thing at the moment I'm really concerned and my vet seems a bit clueless and leaving me in the dark.
He is having eye drops and it's getting more and more red each day, how long did it take for your piggy to heal?

Would appreciate any advice thank you so much!

Katie
