Guinea pig not pooping

Our guinea pig had a lump removed Friday. Yesterday he stopped eating pellets and just munched hay and some treats. We have been giving him critical care too. Yesterday he stopped pooping and we called our vet today. He told us to continue with the critical care but he still isn't pooping. They wouldn't give us any medicine for stasis or bloat. All the vets are closed now. Any suggestions to what we can do. We are so worried for him.

Is your guinea pig on any antibiotics? Sometimes they can affect appetite.

How large was the lump? Where was it located? Did the vet say what kind of lump it is?
If this is small and in the dermal layer, it is unusual that your guinea pig quit eating. Do you suspect bloat?

I would have your guinea pig seen tomorrow at the earliest if you are still having problems.

The lump was about two centimeters on his left back leg. It was subcutaneous and the vet put him on 0.2 ml baytryl twice a day and 0.2 metacam once a day. We think it's gi stasis or bloat or constipation or something like this. We asked today for a motility drug but the vet thought it was just from not eating and drinking. Can not drinking enough be a possible cause of not pooping?

Lack of water can certainly contribute to strange poop, or not much poop.

You can get some infant simethicone drops and give him 1/4 or 1/2 of an infant dose. And if you've got a vibrating object of some kind, it may help to put a towel over it and put him on it.

He may, repeat may, be eating all his poops, not just the cecal ones. Guinea pigs sometimes do that when they're sick or recovering from surgery. So keep a close eye on him and see if that's the case. It's a lot less dangerous situation if he's producing them and eating them than if he's not pooping at all.

But your vet's attitude about it concerns me a little. GPs can go downhill in a big hurry, and failure to eat and poop after a surgery is worrying. Is this an exotic vet?

We gave him some simethicone and he seems to be pooping again more frequently now, but they are still small and skinny. We have also been giving him water with the syringe, which seems like it might be helping. We're looking into another vet, but there aren't a lot of choices in our area.

Thanks for the list. The closest vet to us on the list is Guelph, though, and they're still about two hours away on a good day. We called a closer one to us that is listed specifically as an exotics vet and we are waiting for them to call us back.

Hi! I'm having a similar problem! My guinea pig, Gilbert, just turned 1. He was impacted but we did the whole cleaning thing and took care of the impaction. We are actually starting to clean out his butt everyday. We noticed yesterday that he stopped pooping. We started giving him olive oil because we heard that's good for the digestive system and we also did the poop soup. We also mushed up pellets with water that we are giving him along with water. He's making the straining noise so we think he's just constipated. Last night, we started Simethicone that we got at CVS. Should we give him veggies or will that mess things up? We had given him a cucumber the other day that had helped him poop. I didn't know what else we could do. Suggestions would be great!
