It's official, the UK Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) has turned down my request to quarantine my 5 piggies in Bahrain before I move to London at the end of the year.

I have to quarantine them in the UK for SIX LONG MONTHS. That's a huge chunk of their lives!

UK Guinea Lynxers, I BEG you to ask around (your vets, your local guinea pig rescues, fellow animal lovers, etc.) for quarantine recommendations. They don't have to be quarantine kennels per se--for example some animal sanctuaries are allowed by DEFRA to quarantine animals.

I have consulted DEFRA's list of recommended quarantines (yes, all 3 of them) and they are all businesses, totally commercialised and charging absolutely crazy prices (5,000-7,000 Pounds Sterling!!!). I'd rather pay more sensible money and see it go to a good cause like the upkeep of an animal sanctuary.

Please help my pigs Petit, Filous, Pate, Brulee and Marcel.

I think this should have been added to the other thread you started. Either way I'm making some enquiries, will see what they come up with!

That is such discouraging news. I hope you can work something out. Don't you just want to hit someone on the head for these outrageous rules and regs?

That is just stupid. Makes you think about smuggling piggies ;)

It's ridiculous to quarantine that long for a domestic, generally indoor animal.

Smuggle piggies? Well, if thousands of illegal aliens can get into San Diego on a monthly basis, how hard can it be?

Just kidding, I'm a little bitter.

Anyways, sorry about your troubles. Good luck.

So, pretty much you're not allowed to bring the pigs into the country? Thats horrible...

(Sorry for my stupidity if I am wrong)

Someone from here (does anyone remember who?) moved from Australia to the UK, a little while ago. Because of the extended period of time her pigs would be pretty much stored away with no one to supervise them closely, she decided placing them into good homes was a better alternative than risking them getting sick and not getting the help they needed while in quarantine at the border. Because it wasn't a last minute thing, she had time to screen the adopters carefully.

That is ludicrous. Six months?

I suppose the rules are the same for wild rhesus monkeys from the congo as they are for guinea pigs, huh?

I heard of a month or two, but 6? Geez! In that case, if it were my pigs, I'd probably have to do what cea did and find them good places to live.
