Can you remove metal ear tags?
Pooksied! I heart you! I did two semesters of symbolic logic "just for fun". haha.

LOL. I envy you. If they had had more classes in it, I would have taken more. The class was total playtime. I was so bummed when it was done. Easiest 'A' ever.
Yup, easy 'A' for sure AND it teaches you how to argue. ;)
At least the first semester was easy. The second one sort of blew my mind a little. The arguments were getting a little crazy.

Was Graham an albino pig?
I was also under the impression that if it was to be entered in a show it had to be tagged. That would also beg the question why a show pig was running around a park wild, but that was my first thought was "show pig" for some reason.
No Graham was not an albino pig (see the discussion on the first page), nor was he a PEW. He was a lovely self cream (or maybe buff) American with dark eyes. I first thought maybe show pig or breeder too when I saw the tag, but then why was he in the park? And as we got to know Graham we realized he loved people and he had no idea what to do with other pigs. It was like he had never seen or lived with another pig before. But lots of people crowded around a table 12 inches from his cage, no problem. Time to snack on pellets like they were popcorn and watch all the fun!

-Quoted from http://wikipedia.org/wiki/albinismIn ocular albinism, only the eyes lack pigment. People with oculocutaneous albinism can have anywhere from no pigment at all to almost-normal levels. People who have ocular albinism have generally normal skin and hair color, and many even have a normal eye appearance
So maybe pigs with pink eyes can be albino wether they have dark or light fur?
Use your math skills to make up the rest of my argument. Nuff said. =)

So the pink eyes is a lack of pigment. So at most it would be ocular albinism, which makes sense. Although I've not seen my red-eyed pigs have any of the issues they associate with ocular albinism. No phasing, no ticks, no difficulty seeing. Just no color.
From what I read, guinea pigs lack the allele that causes albinism (unlike mice or rats). Which is why they say there are no albino cavies.
Back to the logic - does the lack of pigment always mean albino? Or is albino a special kind of lack of pigment? In other words: All albinos lack pigment, but is lack of pigment albinism?

Brimstone, I asked about Graham being a PEW because labs don't use non-PEWs typically.
This is a very interesting topic. I need to do some more research on this because I am very curious about the whole genetics now. This is all so very intriguing. I had no idea.
I just got two more PEWs, twins, in yesterday although their eyes are quite a bit different from Bennett's even. The are like bluish iris with red pupil. Bennett's are Pink iris/Red pupil.
Due to a cat emergency, Benny did not make it to the vet on Friday for ear tag removal. That will be a work in process. I know I am more bothered by it than he is.

The vet thought the labs around here (or at least at her institution) typically use PEWs when Graham went in for his checkup. How he ended up in that park will forever be a mystery. But he was a darling, affectionate little guy and I miss him terribly.
Good luck with your PEWs. I'm glad Benny isn't bothered by his earring. Maybe it's giving him some street cred with the other pigs!

Are all lethals deaf? Do all lethals have teeth problems? It was stated that all lethals are blind.
I have what I think is a PEW, but she is blind and deaf. But her teeth are fantastic.

Ohh, now that is an interesting conundrum Cavespring. Salana would probably the person to ask about that. Maybe she'll catch this thread. I guess without knowing what the parents looked like, it would be harder to know for sure if a pig was a lethal or not, without the characteristic tooth problems.
I work at a drug development company and they use PEWs strictly because that is what is bred for the purpose just like 90% of mice and rats are PEWs(?) although they do use others like Han Wistar and Norwegian or so forth occasionally although not often.
The problem with ear tagging though is that they rip out (OUCH) and they are hard to read accurately which makes data collection difficult although that is what they used to use in the old days but they have since moved to microchipping. At least at the company I work for.
Before anyone says anything, all animals are taken care of extrmely well and I work there becuase my mom has cancer and we would have no drugs if we did not have companies like this. I stay away from pig studies because frankly I cannot handle those ones since I work in a rescue and I would want to cuddle them all and cuddling is against the rules.
However, oddly enough since I was talking about Benny, two new PEWs have come into rescue! This is so weird because I have never had any and now I have three! These are basically twin brothers, although really, how could they not be twins when they are PEWs?
There eyes are not exactly like Benny's though in the sense that Benny has very pink eyes and these boys' eyes are very red.
