Different Breeds of Guinea Pigs (A Breeders view)

Josephine, I do think Ginny is a roan. The hair on her back has white strands mixed with agouti strands. She also has a cream color on her belly, and a white patch on her head.
Her full name is Ginny Pig, but we've always called her Ginny.
This photo (from long ago), shows her belly color:

I'm not sure what "grizzling" is!

Wow, great pics. I love the group pic. I think the most I've done at one time was 6 or so! I know how challenging it can be to keep everyone looking the same way and not chewing on each other or creating other mischief!
Are you sure your Teddy isn't a satin? The lighting makes Nellie look very sparkly in places.

Josephine---Thank you for your kind words. Yes, the group shot was a bit challenging and it took husband to give me hand (I posed and he snapped the pictures).
I am not certain with breeds. I try really hard, but I honestly find the correct terms a bit confusing, especially the colors. (I am glad you are taking the time to help clarify for us clueless people :) She is shiny, but I think it is because of the stuff I have to put on her skin because she dries out so badly. Here is another picture of her in case you do not want to use the other one because of her glossy fur...

When you do your write up--could you clarify the difference between a teddy and a rex? I always find that confusing. From what I understand a teddy has short, dry feeling (course) hair, curly whiskers--a rex has dense short hair that would be curly, but it is too short..?? I know that texels are a "product" of rexes. So very confusing--lol
p.s. You don't have to go into all of this now...I was just hoping to someday have a GOOD clarification on this topic. I used to think that Dudley was either a rex or a teddy, now I am thinking my adorable little boy is a mutt.

Yes, thank you Lynx. I did use my board name for consistency, but maybe my real name should be there somewhere (in the end). I use both interchangably on the board, but most people don't recognize my real name right off the bat.
I really like this pic of Weaver's Nellie. Since we are short on Teddy pics, I think it would be great to use on the breed part for Teddy. Let's see, I guess she's a Tortoiseshell & White.
I have no problem revising the Teddy/Rex descriptions to make them more clear. The long and the short of it is that they are visually IDENTICAL. Same coat length, often texture, etc. There is no real way (at least that I knew of when I was showing in the 90s) to tell the difference between the breeds except by test breeding or DNA (which I'm not sure is available readily yet like it is for dogs).
However, the breeds evolved from different genes. If you breed a Teddy to a Rex, the pups will be Americans. Teddy x Teddy makes Teddies and Rex x Rex makes Rexes. I think they are both simple recessive traits, so like some other breeds (satins namely), they can't "carry" other breeds (e.g. a Teddy is always a "pure Teddy" except for the satin variant), but as always mutations and such may occur.
Now, there are 2 Texel breeds: American Texels, derived from Teddies and English Texels, derived from Rexes. Same situation as above. You can not tell by looking at them which one you have.
