I'm new to the forum and I was wondering how you can tell if the grid are the 9X9? I have one adult male guinea pig that I got a little over a month ago that is housed in a super pet cage, but I'm wanting to build him a c and c cage. In a couple of days I'm getting 2 female guinea pigs from a lady off craigslist and they are also housed in a super pet cage, so I plan on building them a c and c cage as well. The closest target is over 100 miles, but I plan driving and looking at their grids in a few days. But i want to make sure i buy the right grids when i get there. If target doesn't have the right grids I'll just order them from walmart.com, but would rather go to an actual store in person to get them.

How can I tell just by looking at the picture on the box that their the 9X9 grids and not the 5X5 or 8X8? A local sign store sells coroplast in 4X8 sheets. Is that size okay or do I need to get bigger sized sheets? I would appreciate any advice.

Coroplast only comes in 4x8 sheets so you are good with that.

As far as the grids, just count the openings. The grids you want have 9 openings across. You can kind of tell by looking at thebox, but since you are traveling such a distance, I would just open the box. If they say anything to you, just tell them why.

Make sure the grids are the ones in the first picture, not the second or third:

Thearina, do you have a Walmart closer? Walmart has grids that you can do ship to store. Basically you buy them online but instead of having to pay shipping you pick them up from customer service at a Walmart you choose. The Walmart grids are the safe 9x9 kind. I'd hate for you to drive 100 miles and possibly not find what you're looking for.

When I was at BJS I saw they were now carrying storage cubes - a box of 6 for about $15. I'll return later this week and check and see how many squares they have though.

Checked. The grids are 9 across, made by 'Mod.' Package of 6 cubes is $14.90. Come in white, black, and gray.

Close Call With OLD STYLE GRID

We just had a very close call with the old style grid. Something didn't sound right and I went into our piggy room. A young female, who is 520 grams, had her head stuck in one of the grids of the hayrack. We make the hayracks out of the 9x9 grids. I would have thought she was big enough to not be in danger, but apparently not.

Luckily my son was home who helped me cut the grid off of her. She is thankfully ok but my heart is still pounding fast.

Has anyone figured out the approximate weight cutoff for when the old style grids are safe?

Oh scary! Good thing you had help to get her out and she is OK.

So what weight should a guinea pig be to be considered safe around the grids that have 9 holes across? 520 grams is now too small to me.

It would be nice to be able to tell adopters that when a guinea pig reaches
x
grams that it is safe to use these grids either as part of the cage or as a hayrack.

My small boar is roughly 950g and I am comfortable with him. Estimating downward, perhaps 700?

Just FYI for anyone looking, ecspecially in BC (maybe other wal marts too), I was at my wal mart yesterday and they had the 9x9 grids in white, made by rubbermaid down the isle with all the do it yourself shelving, shoe racks, and ironing boards area.

Another FYI, I just found a few boxes at Bed, Bath and Beyond . There were about 4-5 left of the 9x9 grids.

Edit: It would help if you knew which Bed, Bath, and Beyond. The one in Niles, near Chicago, on Touhy. So if anyone's in the area, check it out, and if not, I'm guessing other BB&Bs have it.
