If you are interested in having more hay options, start ordering from the site and talking to them, so they know that there is interest in Oxbow or other piggy products.
Ag, the price on the site is pretty much what I pay in stores here. The site may be better to order from, because the product turnover will be higher. Try talking to the company about buying in bulk. Maybe they can give you a deal.
Sahil, try the link, dude! The money you pay for shipping from the states will be more expensive.
Bpatters is right about the hay shipments being in tons. I've spoken to several companies regarding this. Even companies in Bombay will not send me less than 2 tons.
The horse farms in Bangalore do not have good quality hay (lots of bugs and mold), but perhaps farther up you'll get something good?
Let the breeder also know how much damage he is causing by giving out the wrong information just to sell off the pigs and make money.
Ebay is great! Try it out! Has no one ordered from the link I posted?? Guys, the website may be a little more pricey than you'd like, but isn't it better than no hay at all??
**For any piggy slaves in Bangalore**
My piggy, Pinky, just had a bladder stone removed today, and the vets were wonderful! They are not exotic specialists, but they are the best vets I've found so far!
PS:- Change the currency as per your convenience, from the menu at top-left corner. The default is Malaysian Ringgit.
I will wait for this week otherwise will talk to people on chubbypetsgarden, the link which Sahil provided, and see if they could give me a good deal.
Meanwhile, i am planning to grow wheatgrass at home and giving it fresh to my piggies, maybe once or twice a day. Should i give them more??
Good to hear that Pinky will not have to suffer now. Hope he is doing well? Good wishes and kisses for him..
Any grass given should be unlimited, if possible, so it may be hard to grow enough wheatgrass. Do you stay in a flat, or have you got a garden that you can grow grass in?
Start slowly with fresh grasses, as too much fresh grass at once can cause stomach upsets. If you know of any local horse farms or racing tracks, check there for hay. Make sure the hay is a good quality, fresh, and without mold or bugs. It will be cheap. but please ensure its quality before giving it.
Pinky actually passed away last week. Even though the surgery was a success, the post-operative pain and stress was a lot to handle, and he passed about 30 hours after the surgery. I'm happy that he is no longer in pain, but he is definitely being missed!
On a brighter note, though, we did get a new baby piggy who is just as stubborn as Pinky was!
Pooja, try to hunt around for a vet that is on the higher end. They may carry piggy food, or at least be interested in supplying.
RIP Pinky. You will always be remembered..
I called the indiapetstore today and threaten them a bit and they said i will get my hay in 2-3 days. I hope i really get it.
I stay in a flat but i have balcony attached to every room and i also have a personal terrace. So i guess i can grow enough.
Alfalfa is also called lucerne and in india in a lot of places it is reffered to as "Lasoon ghas" ( Not to be confused with garlic.
It is also commonly known as "chaara" and this is the grass commonly provided to cows and horses all around india.
Search around you guys from local farmers or at shops where you get grains in bulk. You might get info on where you will be able to get your hands on lasoon ghas
Esp for Sahil. There are loads of suppliers around punjab who grow this and i also found some who grow timothy as well
Hope this helps you all.
I also tried the indiapetstore thing and am having the same problem that pooja is facing and like i said before i am also planning to grow wheat grass.
Although now i think alfalfa is also going to be available so i can alternate and feed them.
Pimpinpuji: I am so sorry to hear about Pinky. But atleast, she is away from the pain! :(
Many congrats on your new piggy.
It is actually quite easy to grow wheatgrass in pots. My grandmom had grown it once when my grandfather was down with cancer( its very good for such ailments.) What you do is grow it in 7 different pots. Sprout the wheat grains seperately first and then plant them in pots with little soil. Each day plant grains in a different pot. So its one potting for each day of the week. They grow to a good consumable length in about a week. So you have fresh abundant stock for each day.
My piggies will become 1 year old in January. Can i feed them alfafa?
Any idea what is timothy called in hindi?
Lynx: Do you think that alternating like that would be ok for 1 year old piggies. Also Lynx in response to your question, from what i have gained understanding alfalfa is what is fed to horses around here.
