Tennessee, Knoxville

Dr. Cheryl B. Greenacre, D.V.M., DIPL. ABVP-AVIAN
UT College of Veterinary Medicine
Dept. of Small Animal Clinical Sciences
2407 River Dr. C247 Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Knoxville, 37996-4544
865 974-5667

Dr. Greenacre is a small animal/ exotics veterinarian. She has helped me with both Bob and Oreo (boars, 6 and 1 1/2 respectively). Bob had a pretty big bladder stone. She examined him, did the surgery, and handled him after the surgery. His surgery went extremely well, the surturing was literally the best I have ever seen (just a small line, subcutaneous sutures, and never had any drainage or bleeding). Oreo had, and still does have, a nerve problem although he's in little pain. Dr. Greenacre was also great with him. She brought in specialists to look at him (only cost an extra $30), did various tests, and admitted she no longer knows what to do: I respect when someone admits this. She is VERY thorough and VERY knowledgable. Willing to learn and explain things to you.
I would be willing to also try her collegues at the clinic. The school has great resources, and various specialists which is very convenient.
There is also an emergency clinic after 4:30; the only one nearby which has vets that can handle small animals.

She focused her education on small animals, birds, and exotics.

I thought my guinea pig could have mites so I took him to Wilkinson Animal Hospital . They also have a retired doctor that fills in for them when needed that treats exotics as well. His name is Dr. Kim Moore. My Guinea Pig has seen Dr. Moore and Dr. Virgin. They both were very through and took very good care of Spike. Dr. Moore even called my house to follow up on the patient. Dr. Moore and Dr. Virgin said that even though the his scrapings did not show mites they wanted to treat him because skin scrapings often were inconclusive. They treated him with ivermectin and Dexamethasone because Spike also had Otitis Externa (Ear Canal Infection) and an impacted cerumen. The dexamethasone took care of the otitis externa but Dr. Moore felt poor Spike had been tramatized enough by the two shots he received that day and gave me Tresaderm drops and Corium-20 to put in his ear for 10 days to try to loosen the ear impaction. It worked the impaction finally came out. It looked like pebbles. When he went for his follow up treatment the ear infection and impaction were gone and after his second treatment of ivermectin no more scratching him self bald. They gave me lots of brochures and information about Guinea Pigs. I refered my friends that have Guinea Pigs and they have been very pleased. Dr. Moore said that unfortunately people think of guinea pigs as disposable pets. He said it is important to get the word out that with the proper care Guinea Pigs are living longer healthier lives.

Dr. Young
Northwest Veterinary Practice

Tallmadge, Ohio

Very good with basic health concerns and surgical procedures such as spays and neuters. Refers you to another clinic if it is something she is not comfortable treating instead of just taking your money and experimenting like some vets try to do.

Small / Exotic Animals - Maloclussion

STATE/PROVINCE: NJ

Name: Dr. Scott Linick
Address: 2215 Park Avenue
City: South Plainfield, NJ 07080
Phone Number: 908.755.2428

Personal experience: We discovered Peanut - just over 3 yrs old - had maloclussion when we returned from our 1 wk vacation in July. Over the past 2 months, she has seen about 6 different vets. We went to the Animal Medical Center in NYC - they trimmed her front molars too short and left a bottom tooth loose, but did cut her back teeth. The following week, we had the broken tooth removed and filed, because it was in the way of her progress. Beginning of August,we went to Morris County Animal Hospital - the first visit, they took xrays and trimmed her front and back teeth, but her front teeth were not cut short enough. We went for periodic trimmings of her front teeth, but over the past 2 weeks, she started drooling alot and needed more attention again. Last Thursday 9/8, we took her back to Morris County Animal Hospital - a different doctor saw her, put her under, and she stopped breathing - they could not/did not want to proceed that day. On Friday, 9/9, we took her to S.Plainfield Animal Hospital - our local animal hospital (Newton) referred us to Dr. Linick, but he does not work Fridays. Today, Peanut went for her follow-up with him. Over the past week, she lost over 3 oz. - the largest drop yet (she's on CC) and was a high-risk patient. About 1 hr ago, turns out she survived the operation, although there were some complications with the anesthesia. I did not think she would pull through today, but Dr. Linick assured me that he would treat her as his own. I'm very impressed with him, his staff, and the beautiful facility - even though it's almost a 2 hr drive each way. He specializes in small animals. I highly recommend him - after 2 months of searching, we've found a winner!!

STATE: MICHIGAN
CITY: KALAMAZOO/PORTAGE

Exotics, Dogs and Cats

Name: Dr. Smitley @ Milwood Animal Clinic
Address: 5942 Lovers Lane
Portage, MI 49002
Phone: (269)342-9865

Dr. Smitley has treated 4 of my girls and I've been completely satisfied with their treatment. She is always open to anything I have for her to look over or suggestions and wants to learn as much as possible. She is also very good about getting back to me in a timely manner if she feels she needs to consult with someone.
Just recently when I was there they gave me a folder with lots of info about the proper care, diet (promoting Oxbow products) and hay recommendations. I was very impressed that they are putting this out there for people who may not know any better.

Name: Dr Jeffery

Address: Colyton Veterinary Hospital
61 Great Western Highway,
St Mary's, NSW, Australia, 2760

Phone: (02) 96731106

Dr Jeff did his honours and masters in small animals and has his own small animals as pets. He desexed my concerto, treated Symphony's eye infection and treated my piggies for mites. Dr Jeff does not charge for consultation, only for medication and operation etc, he only charged me $75 to desex concerto. Not only is he a good vet, he talks to you like a person unlike many vets that make you feel stupid, he explains things to you, tells you what to look out for etc. He is a very caring and very cool vet, complete with earing, beared and looks like a bikey. :)

NEW JERSEY - CENTRAL
OPEN 24/7

Red Bank Veterinary Hospital
197 Hance Avenue
Tinton Falls, New Jersey 07724
732-747-3636

Dr. Brown, Dr. Dowd, Dr. Strunk

They just opened an Avain and Exotics department. I went to a lecture and got a tour of the building. The have hired the three exotic doctors mentioned above and have purchased all the medical/surgical equipment for exotics. They say the new exotics vets have been doing training with the emergecy vets to better care for exotics. There is always an exotics vet oncall - the emergency vets can contact the exotics vet with questions/advice and if needed the oncall exotics vet will come in.
I only went to the lecture - I have not brought my guinea pigs in so I cannot comment on the care. Dr. Strunk was very nice but be warned: she's developed an allergy to guinea pigs and wears a mask and gloves when treating them. From their bios it looks like maybe Dr. Brown as done more research on guinea pigs. You can access their bios on the web site: http://www.rbvh.net/

Update Northeast Houston

Animal Hospital of New Caney should be taken off the list. Dr. Beverly Wilkinson moved to a different clinic, and Dr. Christopher Monarski moved to Arizona to be a surgeon (lucky Arizonans). The last time I checked, New Caney didn't have an exotics vet on staff.

I have taken my pigs to Dr. Melissa Michels. She is very caring and I trust her opinion completely. The office call fees are very reasonable. I haven't had the need for any surgical procedures so I can't comment on that. I did mention to her that I have gained alot of my knowledge from a guinea pig website...and she said, "Was it Guinealynx?" I was very happy that you have been so well received by her.

I called this clinic today and was told that Dr. Michels has moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. Just thought I would let you know.

If you get an address for her, please let us know. I take it that practice still sees guinea pigs?
