Widget is terrified and we don't know why

I have had this happen a couple of times with rescue piggies, where they were petrified of the cage and switching them to a different cage fixed the issue.

The last one actually had a urinary tract infection and seemed to be associating pain with the cage or something external, within a few days of having the piggy on antibiotics the freaking out stopped.

Unless he somehow managed to poke himself without my noticing, I don't think so. Right now he's cheerful as can be, eating, drinking, running up to the side of the cage to demand attention. He just refuses to go to the hayloft.

I'll have Jim hold him while I look at the bottoms of his feet. Maybe he has a bad spur or something.

It was Henry that got spooked in her loft and wouldn't go up for days. Nothing really spooked her either - I was there when it happened, I checked the loft. It honestly seemed like she bumped into Dudley and wasn't expecting it, jumped 100 feet in the air, and freaked out.

A tip from Maremma (I might have spelled that wrong) - I had to clean EVERY part of the cage, including the ramp. After that it took some gentle shoving, but she almost immediately went back to normal.

Obviously, your house is haunted and he's creeped out. Duh.

Wow. How could I have missed that? Thanks, MommyofGus! Maybe I need to consult with Elly.

Today, Widget was hanging out in his hayloft, so I guess the ghost isn't bothering him right now.

Yeah, ghosts are moody. They only bother pigs when they feel like it.

I wonder if it could static? Like a small static shock? COuld it be on the bedding? Oh well I like the ghost theory better anyway.

How is he now?

It was probably the impending whether. Stirs up the ghosts.

I wonder if it could static?

You know, this is a good question. With the storm that moved in, everything was dry and there was a lot of static electricity. I did run their clean bedding in the dryer with a dryer sheet (which I don't usually do) because it was clinging pretty badly.

He's been eating in his hayloft, a happy Widgy.

Static is a very interesting hypothesis! Definitely within the realm of possibilities.

Static scares the heck out of me when it's unexpected. I can imagine what a piggie must think when they get that little shock.

Of course, it could have been a ghost.

Widget watched TV on the couch with me for about a half hour tonight, a big warm bundle curled up with just his nose peeking out from under a towel.

My vote is still with ghosts.

Yeah, I vote ghosts too.

Have I told you about the wooden hidey house our pigs have? It was Rocky's favorite spot, he used to hang out there all the time. After he died, Apollo went into the house once, almost like he was looking for Rocky, but then didn't go in the house for the weeks or months. Apollo loved sit on top of the house or behind it, but never inside. I was telling a friend about this and she said "Well, maybe Apollo won't go inside because Rocky is still there." I found that oddly comforting, and just a little bit creepy.

There were times were I would have sworn I saw a blur of white zip by, in the cage or under the dinning table where Gilbert got to play during his last few months. Anything is possible.

The cuddle cup that Widget absolutely would not go back in to used to be Gilbert's. I just started putting them back in the cage a couple of weeks ago because they're warm and snuggly and it's now getting cold around here.

Ooh. That IS weird! Gil was in there chattering his teeth. "MY cuddle cup. Stay out!"

So, I'm not the only one here that has experienced this. Twice in the last year since Derek passed away, I have sworn I've seen something whoosh by in the big cage, yet all four pigs were still sleeping/resting in pigloos or their timber houses when I checked afterwards. All four were in the same places as they were before the event occurred.

I'm glad it's not just Jim and me, either! I suppose it could just be wishful thinking, but the universe is vast and complicated. So who knows?
