Petsmart supplier under investigation
Yes I got the same exact word for word responmse on my second inquiry .
Sus ,
I don't know what brand it is it looked like colored catfood. I don't buy that , that is what one of my piggies was on when he came here . I was just thinking if it is the same company there is one more strike against them for making crap food too .

It's just very disgusting, that these evidence photos continue to show up and they are still able to sell animals.
About 2 weeks ago I was in the PetDumb near me and there were signs posted all over the bird cages saying they could not sell any birds due to illness and would resume at the end of January. Surprise,
Surprise!

For those that feel they have no other options than to buy stuff at Petco etc. Try online. I get all pellets, beds, and hay online. For the bigger bulkier stuff like wood pellets and Aspen I go to a farm store. If you don't have a credit card to make online purchases some will take paypal or you can get one of those pre-pay credit cards and use it. Most of the time the options are there if you really want to find them and help put an end to this horrible cycle.
I already buy my pellets and hay via online, but for litter? It's not worth spending $10 in shipping for a $4 bag. A person can only do so much with their time and money.
Thing is, it's not the buying of things like bedding that keep the mills going, it's the actual sale of the animals. Until last month I hadn't set foot in a pet shop for over a decade and it obviously has not stopped them from growing or making money off the sale of small critters. Near as I can tell, people would have zero problem with Petco and PetSmart if they just stop selling animals only, but still sell everything else.
Mill sales stop when people stop buying the animals. I feel I do more good telling people looking in the cages at Petco thinking about getting the piggy in the window that there's places like rescues and Petfinder instead. There's not enough of us for a boycott to work, so education is the next best thing.

You can usually get litter at feed stores/horse supply places or use fleece. Or some local rabbit or guinea pig rescues often sell supplies to benefit the rescue.
No, pet stores do not make much off selling animals. They are called "loss leaders".
They do make money from the products. They make money off the cages that cost $5 to make and they sell for seven times that. They make money off repeat customers - coming back to buy feed, bedding, toys, etc.

Actually the pet stores all lose money on the animals. The animals are loss leaders, they draw people in and then the money is made on the sales of supplies.
It is buying the supplies that keeps the mills going as long as the same pet store sell animals as well.
eta: Hah, sus - I am too slow!

The only local supplier I can find that sells the aspen bedding charges four times the amount of Petstupid. Shipping charges also suck. Maybe I should wander up into the northern part of the metro area to "horse country" and see what I can find.
The aspen I brought was from Ebay, I found a great seller on there who I have used to buy loads of my piggie stuff. Her P&P is very reasonable, she ships quickly and has been very reliable and I use Paypal for that extra added protection.
I've found that works well, so maybe that might be worth a shot for those people where there is no where else you can go locally to buy supplies.
