Benadryl Dosage?
Yesterday much to my horror a wasp flew into our house at 10 pm and landed on Francen. I got it off and killed it before it could sting him.
This made me want to know what the dosage for a pig for children's liquid Benadryl would be. I looked it up in Plumb's (under it's real name which I don't have right now) and the dosage was 75 mg/kg! The dose for cats is 0.5 mg/kg. That was orally. Another book gave only sub que dosages of 5 mg/kg. Well, there is such a disparity that I would not know what to do in an emergency. I even called an exotics clinic and they said 75mg/kg, as they looked it up.
Does anyone know what is a safe dosage of liquid Benadryl to give a pig in case of a bee or wasp sting? They regularly get into our house.

Did you do a search? it may be in a thread. Or Josephine or CP would probably know.
It's likely in a thread somewhere because it's not in the care guide. While the Plumb's is very likely a typo, do know that cats evolved really, really lame livers and they often have very, very low dosages of things because they just can't metabolize them well. The generic name is diphenhydramine.
Also know that liquid benadryl is perhaps the most wretched medication I have ever taken. FOUL stuff.

Thank you! I actually don't think it's a typo as we have found it in different editions, but I still would not use it.

Usually, I err on the side of caution and do 1 mg/#, which is about 2 mg/kg. That's every 8 hours.
I think the 75 mg thing is a typo. Often one reference will use the typo as a reference for their book. It would be interesting to see what the extract is and who published that high a dose. Cavies can often take higher doses than other species due to their physiology, but that sounds so far off, I would never consider it.
(and of course I found this thread by a fluke--I never check the med forum any more, so people need to email me and give me a heads-up if they want me to see it. Sorry.)

Thank you Josephine! All of us at the clinic where in amazement at the crazy dose. It's scary that even another clinic a workmate called said the same! I'm going to ask my trusted cavy vet next time.
I don't even think the pig could swallow so much!
