my gp named moppy is almost 2, got her from a rescue about 2 wks ago with her buddy mocha. the two girls are both eating, drinking, sounding and moving normally. however there was orange urine in one of their play tubes. although they live together i strongly belive it was moppy´s urine because only moppy goes in that tube to hide. it does not look like it has blood streaks but i am unsure if dark orange urine contains blood or it is from diet. they both eat carrots everyday (1 or 2 baby carrots each). i heard carrots can change the gp´s urine color. i know when i first got them both had light yellow urine with a slightly milky appearance so i am wondering if it is diet that has brought about the changes. any info on orange urine? its a dark orange. neither piggies make any sounds of pain while urinating, in fact it seems like quite an easy process... please help !!

by the way i have been trying to contact vets although the vet numbers of "gp specialists" seem to be either disconnected or theyre just not open right now. still working on it.

im in the hampton roads area if anyone knows of a vet i may reach more easily. if i dont hear from anyone here by tonight, tomorrow morning im back in the phone book with my list of questions

Dark orange pee is in the range of normal. I think there is something the oxidizes in pee that is exposed to the air in a puddle -- my guinea pigs occasionally leave orange pee.

If you have any worries, you can have a vet check a pee sample for blood but I think it is quite possible there are no problems.

luckily whoever the orange pee culprit is, they left a little piddle in one of their PVC pipes. (suspecting moppy...) i collected the little bit into a ziploc bag. when held up to the light it looks not so orange... it has lil white specs in it which i assume are normal. either way, the girls need to see a vet simply cuz i got them at a rescue shelter and have no clue of their backgrounds and first two years on the planet. is orange pee at all a sign of kidney problems? i thought it was thats why im freaking out. the girls are munching away on hay right now.
thank you for your reply lynx

Blood in the pee is a sign of problems, but the orange/brown pee you describe is usually just normal pee that´s been sitting around exposed to the air for a while. The oxygen in the air reacts with the pee puddle (which is normally more of a milky white to yellowish color when fresh) and it turns orange/brownish.

However, a vet check is probably a good idea if the pigs are rescues and new to you. It helps give confidence to establish a relationship with a vet before anything goes wrong and gives him/her a chance to get to know both you and your pigs.

well, me, moppy and mocha piled into the car today for their... im assuming first vet visit. i dont know if previous owner(s) took the time to take them in. both looked good, and the pee was fine. mocha had a bit of wax in her ears but the vet cleaned them out (she hated it) and taught me how to clean them if they build up again.
everyone loved my sweet lil girls, especially moppy... it was the long hair that won her everyones attention.

thanks for the replies i appreciate them :)
