Soft poop-please help
Thanks.
My pigs have always done better on Baytril then Bactrim.
Bactrim really seems to kill off an appetite.
If you take the pig off of Baytril before finishing the prescribed treatment, you risk making any bacteria "resistant". (Just like in people.)
I have never noticed a relationship between soft poop and an antibiotic. I had a pig on "pulse therapy" antibiotics for a year and another pig on antibiotics for 10 weeks straight for a bone infection. No soft poops.
I have noticed soft poops from Critical Care. And the poops were smelly and stuck to their feet. But, if the anti-biotic is killing off the appetite too much? You gotta keep the weight on somehow.
Do try giving Sierra fresh pellets and hay an hour before giving the antibiotic.
You know, you are doing a great job.

ok, Sierra's culture just came back neg. We are stumped.
I mentioned her love of eating shavings so we are going to try a hay only bedding for a bit to see if that is what is causing her GI upset. When I took the shavings out and put in hay only she started to nibble on the fleece lined crinkle tunnels I have in there.
Seems she wants to eat everyhting she shouldn't.

OMG! She reached through her cage and ate part of the plastic bag her hay is in. I freaked and called the vet at home. Even though she has soft poops he said to give her the reglan I have on hand and push more hay.
I read threads about other pig being ok after this happened to them
I can't believe this happened. After all I have been doing to save her life now this.
My husband is furious with me. He says I have spent hundreds of dollars to find out what is wrong with Sierra and she has an eating disorder.

I gave her 25 ml of critical care. She pooped on a towel the entire time. Guess the reglan works fast. It was soft still. I could not see any plastic pieces. I will give her more CC in 3-4 hours.
She is grooming herself and nibbling hay now. Surprised she has not tried to eat one of my other pigs for crying out loud. What is her deal? She eats everything!
Another all nighter for me and Sierra
*sigh*

I haven't read the whole thread, but I know that some of my pigs in the past have nibbled on things they normally didn't when they were in pain. I'm not sure if that's been suggested as an explanation. I doubt it's what you need to hear though :/
