Paisley's information makes it seem (to me at least) that even if it's aerosolized, what really matters is if the other pigs have anywhere the bacterium can invade.

Of course, the conjunctiva is always kind of exposed, I suppose...

I hope you have enough antibiotics for everyone and nobody else gets it, Chary.

No, E, I had the same info as you, that is was not contagious until AFTER they were opened.

But I believe she said that Sebastian is downstairs, and she bleaches herself before other pigs.

So, is that to say that Sebastian should have been in another house? I understand airborne, for some reason I would have thought on another level behind close doors you would be safe.

This must be some really nasty stuff.

Is Sebastian a CL pig? I can't keep track of the sick ward at your house, Chary. I thought all the CL pigs were together.

I'm really hoping I'm wrong, Chary. For now, though, panicking just won't do any good. Take a stiff drink and calm down. You'll deal with it if and when you need to. For now, you need to keep a clear head.
I'm really hoping this is just a scare.

Oh cr@p.

Some things are spread through air once something has burst, that could be possible. But, none actually bursts right? They were aspirated on the other pig, and I'm guessing the junk was disposed of and never would have come into contact with this pig.

Now I know why we often have to throw away our cloth chairs in exam rooms at the animal hospital if a very contagious disease patient comes in. Some stuff is just so risky... maybe also spray any surfaces that the infected pigs could have been on (like your computer desk if you put them up there while holding them and typing ever) with Lysol or something?
Gosh we need a diagnosis of this! Darn holidays!

OK, I read again. During my reply you posted and answered. So Sebastian is the only one who has had abscessed opened, so actually, he is the only contagious one, IF it's airborne.

What is the incubation period of CL?

I really hope this is all a scare. If this stuff was airborne.. Rocky and all of my pigs may be infected as well.

I checked all of my pigs, no abcess-like lump anywhere above the waist.

Please dont panic yet Chary. We dont know for sure. Phyllis very well may just have a very unfortunately coincidental abcess...

one lump would be bad enough. two lumps together is a very serious sign, although Josephine did write that there could be other causes.

Yes, Sebastian is a CL pig. We separated him before we aspirated his lumps. Cynthia and I did it in the downstairs bathroom wearing gloves and using lots of alcohol. The needles and gloves were immediately disposed of.

We have found an ER vet in South Pasadena who will aspirate the lumps (for a $95 exam fee, dear God) and send them out for cytology. The problem is, once we open those cysts, she becomes potentially very contagious. The only place I could isolate her would be a) outside--much too hot, or b) in the upstairs bathroom, which is adjoining the room where the dumpster pigs and itchy and scratchy are. But I still have to open that door from time to time if I want to shower and pee.

What about isolation at the animal hospital after aspiration (maybe wait sometime if it's not dangerous until she's been aspirated)?

You could always blame the evil neighbor. Not sure what good it would do, but she needs blaming for something.

Vals got a point, maybe the vet clinic will keep Phy until the results come? How long does a cystology take?

I've never had it take longer than half a week. They even told me about Doom's the other day, and he was only operated on on Tuesday. The first aspirate of his lump took a couple of days for the results.

Do you have friends without pigs who could pigsit her for a few days?

Ok, this question has come up:

If it's strep, it's zoonotic, right? So other people and animals can catch it if the abscess is opened?

I think it's a different strep than the one that causes sore throats in people.

Here is all I found
Strep Throat--Though your pet is probably not the culprit bringing strep into your household each year, the possibility does exist. Recently, researchers have found that it's more likely that people are infecting their pets. In any case, keep your children from kissing, licking or exchanging food by mouth with their pets.

I know Linda (Zoe) has had to deal with this.

Here is her post in the reference forum: http://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=769

Good luck.

I'm just wondering what it's going to look like once you get little gas masks for all the CL pigs. Do you think they make those white ones in GP size?

What a mess, I'm so sorry.
