Lynx,

I've searched through the ringworm threads and looked at the GL fungus page - here is some information that you might consider adding to the GL fungus page. Someone more knowledgable on this subject may have some useful info to add as well.

The oral treatments listed on the GL page include Program and ketoconazole. There is now a third - itraconazole - with the US brand name Sporonox and the UK brand name Itrafungol. For dogs and cats, itraconazole has shown fewer negative side effects than ketoconazole but is unfortunately more expensive.

For reference and more info:

Link to US site: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_itraconazole.html
Link to UK site with dosing info: http://www.noahcompendium.co.uk/Janssen ... 33899.html

I am currently treating my pig with Itrafungol - when the vet prescribed it she explained that it was a fairly new treatment (maybe just in the UK) that has been very successful in the treatment of ringworm.

Any other members out there with info or experience with this med?

I think most people on this site have treated successfully with Program (lufernuron).

Lydster, I added this drug to the fungal page with a link back to your post.

Ginger, my pig with Aspergillus Flavus diagnosed by fungal culture of the nose, is on Itraconazole and is responding. Although I did have to lower her dose.

I just updated her thread, we have been dealing with this for almost a year.

The thread is called "Any recommendations for a sick pig" if you are interested.

You had to lower her dose? Were there side effects?

She is having times where she doesn't want to drink, I don't know why. During one of those, she got dehydrated and started having seizures. I think it was because she was dehydrated and the medication was screwing up her liver (Liver toxicity is a possible side effect, and repeated bloodwork is recommended while on it--although I opted not to)

I found in a book somewhere that with dogs, sometimes it will affect their liver after having been on it for awhile, and if you cut the dose in 1/2 they do ok. So that is what I did and for now she seems to be doing ok, and is improving overall.

Our vet won't prescribe Program for ringworm because there's some suggestion that it's not very effective.

Fozzy, my Rex piggy was prescribed Itrafungal about 2 years ago. Off the top of my head I can't remember the dosage but he was on it for quite a while (about 30 days I think). I can look up the details later if you would like.

He responded well to it, he was given it becase he had hair loss and was itching and the course of Ivermectin wasn't really helping.

It is an expensive medicine, it was about £40 for the bottle, whereas Ivermectin costs me £10

Ditto Jaycey. Itrafungal has been around a long time here.

Lyd, maybe its just that your vet hasn't used it before?

This is an old thread. I'm going to close it so it is not artificially brought to the top.
