Your pharmacist should be a reliable source. You could ask another pharmacist the same thing if you were concerned.

Keep in mind that simethicone only helps a little. If a guinea pig has bloat, this will not cure it.

With bloat would his abdomen not be hard and distended? At the moment it is soft and there is a lot of gurgling especially when I feed him. I am hoping we can kick start him with the feed he is getting and no more veg for the moment.

I will need advice to take to the vet on bloat treatment if it comes to that.

Thank you for the help so far.

It is now over 12 hours since I started feeding Herbie a mush of his pellets, GP poop, and some pured veg but still no poops from him except one stringy one that i had to clean away.

His belly is obviously larger and firmer but not hard. Should I continue feeding him today whilst I wait to take him to a vet on Monday?

It is 4am and I have just given him a few mls of water to keep him hydrated. I tried massaging his belly but he hates being touched on his underside at the best of times. I do hear gurgling whenever he eats or drinks anything. He is lying on his side in a U shape and every so often gets up and moves as he is obviously uncomfortable. Wish I could find someway to make things get going for him.

Was really hoping something would have moved through by now. Am I being impatient? I am now very worried about what my next move should be to try to help him.

I have been reading the thread on Chronic Bloat and think the following is a good plan.

Continue feeding v.small amounts of pellet/poop/veg mash(v small amount) regularly - 1ml every hour
Give Dimeticone 1ml every feed for 2 feeds in am and 2 feeds in pm
Give an probiotic
Give 2ml of water every feed

Introduce him to his girls to get him moving - I jave four females that are set up so he can run around their cage and say Hi whilst touching noses.

On Monday drive 45 mins to the nearest vet with a NAC (small mammal qualitifaction) to get some pain medication and more Critical care.

There are no Guinea pig specialists near here as it seems there is no culture of spending money on their care if sick - sadly I see it with dogs and cats too so GPs stand no chance.

My main worry is that I do think he has the beginnings of a URI - the nose is more runny though still no snuffly breathing yet I think it is going in that direction. But, I really do not want to have to give an antibiotic whilst dealing with a lack of motility.

So that is the plan. Hopefully Herbie will come right.

Hoping he makes it. Encouraging him to move around is a good idea.

All of that sounds like a good idea. You might try some charcoal caps. I give them for bloat and they seem to work well. Just open the capsule and sprinkle a bit in water then dissolve and syringe. Just don't give within 2 hours of other meds as it may absorb them.

Kept to the plan of smaller regular feeds but when I saw that his tummy had deflated alot since early this am after giving his fourth dose of wind medecine, I upped the amounts as he has lost 40g.

I have been massaging his belly alot and that always leads to some serious gurgling noises which I take as a good sign. I have also had him out to run circuits of the girls enclosure 3 times. This does mean having to let him munch a few strands of grass but he seems to really want to and it is the only thing he actually wants to eat.

So far I have seen two tiny very stringy poops this morning and had just about given up again this pm....he felt bloated again so I gave him a good long massage, then out again with the girls after a 4ml of mush. I then got a tiny, very wet, poop.....so fingers crossed we can keep them coming.

I cannot hold off on antibiotics any longer either. The plan was to get some motility back then get him on them to see if we can clear the runny nose. So even though it is early poop days and we will no doubt be set back after the first hit of Baytril...we are starting on the next feed. I am going to dose him on 7.5mg every 12 hours as he is not going to get all of that due to the fact that a lot of food doesn't make it into his mouth. The Baytril is in tablet form so I have to crush it and add it to something I can put in a syringe.

What is the minimum amount of time he should be on them? 10 days? I am going to be at a better vets tomorrow to get critical care and will confirm with them but would appreciate any input based on experience as the vet won't have any but they will have a book to look it up in.

Thanks again for all the support. My husband has just read all the posts and thinks this is a great site for advice and support, especially at 4.30am!

Here is a link for antibiotics https://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html#baytril I would say 1-7 days to be on it. Have you a probiotic to put Herbie on to protect his tummy? When Jessie was on it she went off food, pooping and peeing.
Hoping all goes well at the vet today(tomorrow where you are) Keep us posted! You are doing a wonderful job! Way to go Herbie!

You can also give twice the dose every 24 hours. I believe Josephine mentioned that the manufacturers of Baytril recommend once daily medication for cats and dogs on the theory that it hits the bacteria harder (once every 24 hours) instead of less hard every 12 hours.
