Easy wheatgrass growing (photos), share yours too!
My grass trials were both failures. I found a new company that will deliver flats to me today (no fertilizers used), though they are a tad pricey. After one flat is finished, I'll try to plant again in the same soil.
Can I plant right away, or do I need to somehow treat the soil? Remove the berries, etc?

Thanks Caruba! I loved it! It grows really fast and is very beautiful.
I put the grains soaked in water for one day, then put three layers of paper towel in a plastic tray, spread the seeds and cover with plastic for 3 days. So I removed the plastic and I'm keeping moist.
I left it out of my house, a place that gets no direct sun light, and is working!
Maybe it have not created mold because outside is more airy? I don't know.
Bugs Mom, you're right!
I made two pans, so I'll test it by put a tray for them and see how they eat. The other I'll trim to grow more!

Ok, I could not resist and gave the wheat grass yesterday!
I was amused to see the reaction of Pantufinha: she is the most greedy, but was frightened to see the "mysterious grass!" Her face was very funny when she began to eat and the root came along! But them ate only grass, let the root.
Finally, I cut the grass and gave to them, they loved it!
"Hey Mom, what is this?"
"Delicious!"
"I think I ate a root!"
"This way is better!"

Awesome thread! I've been thinking about his for years and actually just started my first batch this week. I was thrilled to see this thread.
This is how it looks today. There are a lot more seeds that are coming up under the soil, and a little bit of fuzz that I think I'll spritz some vinegar on. All in all, a very very simple project. Each step took about 3 minutes or so. According to my research I should be able to cut this down 3 times before it dies out.
I live near San Francisco where it's been really cold/rainy (yea, even today it poured all day long) and even the sunny days have been very cool, not going above 70 every day. My planter is only getting early morning sun
- 1. -- I purchased a package of "kitty grass" seeds from Pet Food Express. They have a variety of grasses in the mix.
2.-- I soaked them pint/quart canning jar 24 hours
3.-- After 24 hours, I pulled an old knee-high stocking (or use a pantyhose leg) over the top & pulled it down the jar so that it covered the whole jar It acts as dark cover & a strainer.
4.-- I drained out the existing water and ran fresh water over the seeds. I laid the jar on it's edge of the sink to drain.
5.-- I repeated the rinse/drain for 3 days.
6.-- I prepared the planter in the meantime by watering the soil thoroughly each day so that it was soaked. I happened to have some peat moss and I soaked that as well in water.
7.-- When they had tiny little white buds on them I rewatered the planting soil & planted them with generic potting in a flat planter. I pushed some down into the soil, and left some on the top, and just barely covered them with soil/peat moss.
8.-- I then soaked a couple pieces of newspaper that were large enough to cover the planter and laid them down tightly onto the soil.
9.-- Then I forgot about the seeds completely!! Seriously. I forgot I even did it. Then 4 days or so when I remembered, (that was today) I went onto my patio and saw that the newspaper had lifted up and was dry and took off the paper
Here's an image of how it looked today when I took off the paper.

This week I did more wheat grass, but I made fewer. My girls just get so crazy to eat this!
When I gave them a little, they looked me with those faces, like saying "hey mom, we know you have more of it!" haha
Some people are asking me about millet grass. Are this safe for guinea pigs? And what about birdseed?
