Demoness i have checked that thread on Marsut.net but it's outdated and that vet has long moved away.

I will be calling the clinic tomorrow, but i'm fairly sure there is a small animals specialist there and that they do teeth trimming.

I took Lilly there when i first found a lump on her.
She had lost some weight so i asked them to check her teeth. They said that if her teeth were overgrown they would file them down, so i'm sure they have the necessary tools there.

Unfortunately it was also there that her lump was misdiagnosed as a fatty limpoma, when in fact she had a swollen lymph node and a large tumour in her stomach. That was my bad experience there, since Lilly was put to sleep last December.

Anyway, Momo is perking up for some reason. I handfed her two days ago to bring her weight up, but she hasn't needed any handfeeding today. She managed to bring her weight up by 30 grams and she even graced us with zoomies around the cage. At least i know her teeth aren't bothering her too much yet.

I will continue weighing her twice a day and handfeeding as necessary until we are past this crisis.
I will post tomorrow after i find out if the vet has experience and tools to do this procedure.

Please tell this to the person who is maintaining the list.

Nice to hear that Momo has perked up!

I rang the vet clinic this morning and they do have a small animal's specialist and also the right tool to file down the molars.
Momo has an appointment for tomorrow at 13.30. They said they want to take a look before doing any procedure.

Momo is up by 40 grams since the weigh-in on Saturday so i'm feeling hopeful.

Well, i decided to cancel the appointment at the vet and observe Momo throughout the week. I'm weighing her twice a day and recording it.

The reason is because Momo's weight has been going up everyday. She is now 1130 grams, thus she has gained 60 grams since Saturday.

The vet there sedates the pigs in order to check their teeth, since i've never seen them use a tool that opens their mouths.
I really don't want to sedate Momo unless i have to, and the incredible weight gain makes me believe the e-vet didn't really know what she was doing.

If i see any sort of weightloss again i will ring the vet and take her there. This vet is actually 10 minutes away from my house so i can get there fairly quick provided that they have a time for me.

I believe the reason for the weightloss might be the fact that we recently moved to a new apartment. She and her cagemate Mimi suffered significat weightloss after we moved in, and now both of them have gained weight since Saturday. They also became alot more lively and started splattering themselves all over the cage.

I will, of course, keep an eye for Momo. The minute i see significat weightloss she goes get her teeth checked.

Sounds like a plan, especially if you are seeing good poop production.

Are you sure that the vet sedates them just to check the teeth? Did you ask? That doesn't sound like something a skilled vet would do.
Every vet I've seen to do dental work on guinea pigs has used the tool that keeps their mouths open to be able to trim the molars.

I have no experience of this myself but I have heard that the sharp points in the molars might sometimes wear off if the guinea pig is eating well.

Well the ones here in Kuopio use a lamp like thing that they insert in the mouth to check their back teeth.
Since it's usually full of food back there they try to clean it with a cotton swab.

This particular vet that is the small animals specialist, did sedate one of my pigs in order to check her teeth. She basically inserted it inside her mouth, said she couldn't see anything unless she was sedated.

Unfortunately the vets here aren't as skilled as the ones of the South of Finland. Hopefully i'll be moving to the South in half a year and will probably find a more cavy savy vet.

I'm sorry to hear that the vets in Kuopio are unable to check guinea pig's teeth without sedating them. I think you are doing the right thing avoiding unnecessary anaesthesia. I hope Momo continues to be well!

Since this posting Momo gained her weight back, and with the addition of a few drops of pure cranberry juice in the water bottle, she is no longer crying while peeing and the cage is almost sludge free.

However we have a new problem. I offered them cucumbers i had placed in the freezer for an hour since it's so hot. But Momo broke her lower front tooth.

Image

It broke all the way to the gum line, and as you can see it is still bleeding. I noticed there was something wrong because she wasn't picking up any of the vegetables i was offering, though showing great interest.

Any advice? She loves critical care, i don't even need to syringe that, she eats it from a spoon. Should i start handfeeding every two hours? Sorry, i'm a bit nervous since this is my first tooth breaking.

Poor girl! I'm rather surprised to see the tooth bleeding. I always thought it was a fairly bloodless injury.

See: www.guinealynx.info/_broken.html

Ought to grow back fine. A little critical care might be a good idea and weighing daily. If you feel she is in any pain, you might even look into pain medication though I suspect she will adjust and start eating fine fairly quickly.

Let me know if you'd like me to add this pic permanently to the thread.

I have no idea what happened, i'm not even sure it was the cucumber. She sometimes likes to chew the grids, so i wonder if it could be that?

So far she is eating vegetables fine, if i chop them into finer pieces. I saw her eating pellets as well, but she seems to be having issues with the water bottle. It's only been an hour, so i'm still observing her.

I'll be giving her some daily critical care throughout the day, just to make sure she is getting all she needs.
I'll be giving her water as well if i see she can't use the water bottle in the next few hours.

And you can add the picture, thank you.

My poor Momo.

Ouch! Poor Momo. Are you sure it's bleeding at the gumline and not her tongue? Ditto the others' advice.

Just out of curiosity...is it an optical illusion in that photo, or do her upper incisors both have a slight indentation in them?
