Update:

Pantufinha had another teeth surgery in 08/29. I was not able to take a picture this time, the vet sent me some pictures right now. I want to share this one, as her teeth is looking so odd.



It's strange in color and texture, it's fragile. Vet doesn't know what can be causing this condition.

The upper incisors are gone forever. No roots present in x-ray, it was reabsorved for unknown reason too. And the lower incisors broke in the surgery... *sigh*

Ok. But it's not only bad news. Good news is that she's very active, she's eating her mash with my help and small pieces of veggies and she's gaining weight. In the surgery's day, she was 680g, now she's 750g. She's 4 years and 4 months old now.

Have to say that overall, it sounds positive. Weight gain (no small achievement as I still haven't got my sow back to her original weight even after 2 months after her spay) and being active are all good signs. I hope she continues to do well.

I think of mineral issues. Is she only eating mash right now? Can't eat any hay or grass then? Can you go over her diet? Where are the pellets from?

You do such a fabulous job taking care of your guinea pigs, Regiane. And they are so charming. I wish them all good health in your care - but they really have a friend and dedicated caretaker when something goes wrong.

Thank you all for the support. She's really surprising me. I hope her lower incisors grow again, so she'll be able to pick some things by herself. She wants to be independant! I handfeed her a lot, and then, back to the cage, if I put pellet mash in a plate, she goes and try to eat more.

Lynx, she's eating Critical Care, pellet mash (I use KM pellets), then I add oatmeal or wheat germ, and sometimes I use a mash made of cooked green banana. She's not eating grass or hay, but she can eat chopped veggies.

I also started using this supplement. I don't like using multivitamin, but in this case, I think it's really helping.

What I was looking for was excess iron or minerals that might be staining the teeth. The supplement doesn't seem to have minerals so perhaps that is good. You might want to investigate added iron in oatmeal or wheat germ. It might be higher in green bananas (don't know).

I showed my vet the picture of Pantufinha's mouth and she was wondering when the teeth were filed whether they were burnt too much causing the roots to die off which in turn caused the teeth to become brittle and fall out?
She is not piggy savvy in last 12 months has started to specialise in animal dentistry.

I agree, Regianne - you do such a great job caring for your pigs - they're lucky to live with you. The supplement looks interesting. I don't know very much about calcium levels, etc., but it looks like this supplement has alot of calcium. Is that an okay level for pigs to have? I have to watch the calcium for some of my piggies, so I was just wondering. . .

Excess calcium is not good - it could lead to bladderstones. I think in humans excess calcium can lead to heart issues. Noit sure if that would apply to pigs.
