What would you recommend I do? Do you think it's getting infected?

Would any topical ointments work on an incision to help prevent infection?

What about a diluted iodine rinse?

I don't have any iodine, and there's no drugstore-type places open this late. I have triple antibiotic ointment + pain relief (for my own use) and I was planning on putting on some bandaids to try to hold the sides together, and to give her something more to get through when she wants to groom away the sutures. Would the antibiotic ointment be safe under the bandaids?

I wouldn't chance the ointment. As it "melts" with her body heat, it will ooze out, and she could easily injest it.

Don't close it together, either. That will hold infection in.

How much are you restricting her moving around? She needs to be in a seriously small cage until you can get that looked at (which needs to be SOON). You don't want that coming open any more.

Do you think she would deal with a "body suit" made from a sock?

Oh, and yes, I do think that's beginning to look infected.

Any chance you can get a clearer picture?

She's in a 1x2 C&C, but what she does is sit in her hidey house and pull out her stitches.

I have some old socks, so I'll try that. She will probably be very infuriated.

What if I put bandaids on it without closing it? And then put the sock over that? To make it harder to get to the sutures.

By soon, do you mean tonight, tomorrow, or Monday?

I like the bandaid/sock idea. She'll just have to deal with it.

If at all possible, I'd get in to someone tomorrow.

And I'd consider pulling her hidey so that she can't be a twit in secret.

Okay. Henceforth, the hidey will be used only to transport her (it's a cardboard box with a side cut out). She eats more when she's not in the hidey, too. She goes over and gobbles hay.

Oh, GROSS!

Ok, change what I said...get her in to someone tomorrow. Hell, if your vet is available at all tonight, that would work, too.

Wow, that doesn't look too pretty, especially in the open spot.

And I should mention, don't put anything medicated-wise on that incision without a vet knowing about it.

Okay, Mel, all I have is really antibiotic ointment and hydrogen peroxide, which I would never torment her with. Erin, the open spot actually looks pretty clean. The red is the muscles beneath the skin, and the gray is what looks like perhaps the beginning of a reaction to the %&($**(#@#&$@( dissolvable sutures in the abdominal wall.

Looks like nylon for the skin sutures. I've seen quite a few cats and dogs react to that.

Oh man! I feel so bad for you. I think the bandaid and sock idea will work until you can have it looked at.

I put her back in the cage and she pulled herself out of the sock. Little twit.

Got tape to put at both ends of it, stuck to the hair and the sock?

By the way, I added you to my MSN Messenger buddy list.
