Yeah, this wasn't an easy one. I actually made an appointment to do it two weeks ago, when she stopped grooming herself, but her alert, bright-eyed interest in food and interaction convinced me it wasn't quite time. Then yesterday something happened, and we found her stuck on her back. Even once we righted her and things seemed a bit better, her right side was obviously not working quite right. And while she was still quite interested in food and interaction -- she actually woke me up yesterday complaining that she didn't care if it WAS Sunday, she was hungry! -- she was clearly not eating well enough to survive. The tumor in her gut felt like it was the size of a softball, and her tiny little body could barely support it, let alone get enough calories otherwise.
So it was time. But nobody had informed Cookie. She was munching apple and freeze-dried strawberries on the table in the office while we waited for the vet.
