Green oats

We offer green oats as a daily snack since many years.
We noticed that a sick pig who can still eat a bit on their own, eats green oats instead of hay. Before we had green oats, those pigs only ate vegs, with diarrhea as a consequence. It seems they lack the strength to chew hay and since green oats are less fibrous, they can still chew that.
Since then, we give green oats as a snack daily. When there is a sick pig, they get as much green oats as they can eat, which has kept many alive.
Binky, my heart pig, who is forced to live on his own due to Petit Mal which seems to come across as being aggressive to other pigs, survives on green oats. Since we are his 5th owner, we noticed that he must have never had much hay in his life. In the Dutch area, food with small hay pieces is popular, that's all he had most likely, except the last owner had brown dry unattractive hay for him, at least he sorta tried to do his best.
As soon as Binky tasted the green oats, he became addicted. We stood by him, his eyes turned as big as saucers, lol, and he dug in like crazy. We tried to exclude it from his diet, then tried to offer Timothy instead of Orchard too, but nope, not enough to have firm poos. And he did not even touch Timothy, so he even got diarrhea after 2 days. He seems to eat some Orchard, but not much. He eats green oats with so much gusto, it actually keeps him healthy.
Although I would not advise green oats for pigs instead of hay initially, I thought it might be great to share this info, since it can help other sick pigs, or pigs who are not keen on any type of hay.
