First the first time since I joined this board I am actually thinking "Where is Evangeline"?

One of the things that I really like about my pigs is their ecclectic mix. With the exception of my first pig, they are all adopted (Chip is from a pet store, before I knew any better). I have two Americans, one Abby, and one Peruvian. It just happened that way, when I went to the shelter I just chose the pig that I fell in love with the hardnest.

By adopting more pigs if you want a larger herd, you give a homeless piggy a new home, you don't put your current pigs health in danger, and you gain a lovely mix of breeds and personalities.

I am kind of curious though why so many people on here have pigs having babies all the time - pics almost weekly - surprised they don't get 'the business' about it.

Most of the people on here with pregnant sows bought guinea pigs from pet stores not knowing they were pregnant. Some have adopted or rescued pregnant sows. Some have pregnant sows because their pigs were missexed. But almost no one here condones breeding, or has bred their pigs purposefully.

Do you ever actually READ the threads on this board? Or just look at the pictures and say "awwww"? People have pregnant pigs because they have rescued them from idiots who bought male and female pigs from the pet store and dumped them at the shelters when they realized they were about to have more pigs.

Anyway I like this site, there is a lot of good info, and I really enjoy the pictures of everyone's pigs and cages. Let's just focus on that and forget the rest since it's not something that will likely happen anyway and I promise if I ever get to the point of thinking about doing it I will let you guys talk me out of it then. Deal?

Most people do get reamed when they come on with pregnancy questions. All those people having pigs have babies were either ignorant people (whose ignorance is quickly pointed out to them) who bought pigs from petstores that came pregnant, or they are rescuers who rescued pigs that were already pregnant.

People who mention purposely breeding get bashed, for good reason.
*There are too many homeless pigs already.*
And
*Every pig bred means death for another homeless pig.*

OK so I won't ever mention it again.

There are just too many homeless pigs and so many dangers associated with breeding. There is nothing better to me than the feeling of adopting a shelter or rescue pig and giving him or her the love he or she may have never known before.

I think a new pet owner in general should go slow and make sure it's a good fit.

If someone isn't sure about pigs (people drop by the forum all the time wondering about pigs) then s/he should wait until s/he is sure. People who don't think through pet ownership are why so many end up in shelters.

Orvis, should you consider a friend for your pig, try the shelter/rescue route. Aside from all the issues about breeding, older pigs are less crazy and make better lap pets, generally.

Oh, and it's a deal. Consider yourself talked out of it. Bookmark the thread if you need to.

I promise not to breed pigs or talk about it.
I promise not to breed pigs or talk about it.
I promise not to breed pigs or talk about it.
I promise not to breed pigs or talk about it.
I promise not to breed pigs or talk about it.

How many times before I can go to recess?

Raven you have a great point, people should think it through first...and talk to some people first, and educate themselves first. That's always the best way to do anything I believe.
