Dr Chris only sees birds, reptiles, and small and furries.
He spends a lot of time with you and goes over every aspect of what he is doing during the examination. He also carries the Oxbow product line. So far the only one that I have found to carry the GP stuff.

What I like about Dr. Ryan is that she has a dog, several birds, and two rabbits right in the office with her so you know she loves animals. Also, last month when Spike (my GP) injured his eye, she has a referral service so that she was able to get nearly immediate advice from an exotics specialist in Canada (and it seems from this and other boards that Canadians know a lot more about cavies than we do).

NEW JERSEY:

The Animal Clinic of Morris Plains
Route 10 West
Morris Plains, NJ
973-539-2775

Dr. Pamela Schott, Dr. Powell or Dr. Sedlacek.

Reasonable rates and they do emergency service here. A vet is on call after hours and will phone you to discuss your options in case of an emergency.

Brookside Veterinary Clinic
Broad Street
Bloomfield, NJ

Dr. Keith Samson

Dr. Samson is not a part of a group practice and he is a wonderful vet who knows a lot about guinea pigs. He uses Sevofluorane gas because he feels it's safer than Isofluorane. Sevo is much more expensive so his fees for surgery are high. I highly recommend him if you can afford it.

Dr. Danci Mock
West Caldwell Animal Hospital
Bloomfield Avenue
West Caldwell, NJ
973-226-3727

Dr. Mock is a wonderful, experienced compassionate vet. She has lots of experience with guinea pigs and even has her own. The downside is the $57 office visit but if you can afford it I recommend her as well. This is a 6 vet group practice but I only have experience with Dr. Mock.

Tennessee, Knoxville

Dr. Cheryl B. Greenacre, D.V.M., DIPL. ABVP-AVIAN
UT College of Veterinary Medicine
Dept. of Small Animal Clinical Sciences
2407 River Dr. C247 Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Knoxville, 37996-4544
865 974-5667

Dr. Greenacre is a small animal/ exotics veterinarian. She has helped me with both Bob and Oreo (boars, 6 and 1 1/2 respectively). Bob had a pretty big bladder stone. She examined him, did the surgery, and handled him after the surgery. His surgery went extremely well, the surturing was literally the best I have ever seen (just a small line, subcutaneous sutures, and never had any drainage or bleeding). Oreo had, and still does have, a nerve problem although he's in little pain. Dr. Greenacre was also great with him. She brought in specialists to look at him (only cost an extra $30), did various tests, and admitted she no longer knows what to do: I respect when someone admits this. She is VERY thorough and VERY knowledgable. Willing to learn and explain things to you.
I would be willing to also try her collegues at the clinic. The school has great resources, and various specialists which is very convenient.
There is also an emergency clinic after 4:30; the only one nearby which has vets that can handle small animals.

513 Ledwell Street
Gastonia, NC 28056
Phone: 1 (704) 824-9876

She focused her education on small animals, birds, and exotics.

I thought my guinea pig could have mites so I took him to Wilkinson Animal Hospital . They also have a retired doctor that fills in for them when needed that treats exotics as well. His name is Dr. Kim Moore. My Guinea Pig has seen Dr. Moore and Dr. Virgin. They both were very through and took very good care of Spike. Dr. Moore even called my house to follow up on the patient. Dr. Moore and Dr. Virgin said that even though the his scrapings did not show mites they wanted to treat him because skin scrapings often were inconclusive. They treated him with ivermectin and Dexamethasone because Spike also had Otitis Externa (Ear Canal Infection) and an impacted cerumen. The dexamethasone took care of the otitis externa but Dr. Moore felt poor Spike had been tramatized enough by the two shots he received that day and gave me Tresaderm drops and Corium-20 to put in his ear for 10 days to try to loosen the ear impaction. It worked the impaction finally came out. It looked like pebbles. When he went for his follow up treatment the ear infection and impaction were gone and after his second treatment of ivermectin no more scratching him self bald. They gave me lots of brochures and information about Guinea Pigs. I refered my friends that have Guinea Pigs and they have been very pleased. Dr. Moore said that unfortunately people think of guinea pigs as disposable pets. He said it is important to get the word out that with the proper care Guinea Pigs are living longer healthier lives.

OHIO
Tallmadge (Akron area)

Dr. Young
Northwest Veterinary Practice
99 Northwest Ave.
Tallmadge, Ohio

Very good with basic health concerns and surgical procedures such as spays and neuters. Refers you to another clinic if it is something she is not comfortable treating instead of just taking your money and experimenting like some vets try to do.
