Small / Exotic Animals - Maloclussion

STATE/PROVINCE: NJ

Name: Dr. Scott Linick
Address: 2215 Park Avenue
City: South Plainfield, NJ 07080

Personal experience: We discovered Peanut - just over 3 yrs old - had maloclussion when we returned from our 1 wk vacation in July. Over the past 2 months, she has seen about 6 different vets. We went to the Animal Medical Center in NYC - they trimmed her front molars too short and left a bottom tooth loose, but did cut her back teeth. The following week, we had the broken tooth removed and filed, because it was in the way of her progress. Beginning of August,we went to Morris County Animal Hospital - the first visit, they took xrays and trimmed her front and back teeth, but her front teeth were not cut short enough. We went for periodic trimmings of her front teeth, but over the past 2 weeks, she started drooling alot and needed more attention again. Last Thursday 9/8, we took her back to Morris County Animal Hospital - a different doctor saw her, put her under, and she stopped breathing - they could not/did not want to proceed that day. On Friday, 9/9, we took her to S.Plainfield Animal Hospital - our local animal hospital (Newton) referred us to Dr. Linick, but he does not work Fridays. Today, Peanut went for her follow-up with him. Over the past week, she lost over 3 oz. - the largest drop yet (she's on CC) and was a high-risk patient. About 1 hr ago, turns out she survived the operation, although there were some complications with the anesthesia. I did not think she would pull through today, but Dr. Linick assured me that he would treat her as his own. I'm very impressed with him, his staff, and the beautiful facility - even though it's almost a 2 hr drive each way. He specializes in small animals. I highly recommend him - after 2 months of searching, we've found a winner!!

STATE: MICHIGAN
CITY: KALAMAZOO/PORTAGE

Exotics, Dogs and Cats

Name: Dr. Smitley @ Milwood Animal Clinic
Address: 5942 Lovers Lane
Portage, MI 49002
Phone: (269)342-9865

Dr. Smitley has treated 4 of my girls and I've been completely satisfied with their treatment. She is always open to anything I have for her to look over or suggestions and wants to learn as much as possible. She is also very good about getting back to me in a timely manner if she feels she needs to consult with someone.
Just recently when I was there they gave me a folder with lots of info about the proper care, diet (promoting Oxbow products) and hay recommendations. I was very impressed that they are putting this out there for people who may not know any better.

Name: Dr Jeffery

Address: Colyton Veterinary Hospital
61 Great Western Highway,
St Mary's, NSW, Australia, 2760

Phone: (02) 96731106

Dr Jeff did his honours and masters in small animals and has his own small animals as pets. He desexed my concerto, treated Symphony's eye infection and treated my piggies for mites. Dr Jeff does not charge for consultation, only for medication and operation etc, he only charged me $75 to desex concerto. Not only is he a good vet, he talks to you like a person unlike many vets that make you feel stupid, he explains things to you, tells you what to look out for etc. He is a very caring and very cool vet, complete with earing, beared and looks like a bikey. :)

NEW JERSEY - CENTRAL
OPEN 24/7

Red Bank Veterinary Hospital
197 Hance Avenue
Tinton Falls, New Jersey 07724
732-747-3636

Dr. Brown, Dr. Dowd, Dr. Strunk

They just opened an Avain and Exotics department. I went to a lecture and got a tour of the building. The have hired the three exotic doctors mentioned above and have purchased all the medical/surgical equipment for exotics. They say the new exotics vets have been doing training with the emergecy vets to better care for exotics. There is always an exotics vet oncall - the emergency vets can contact the exotics vet with questions/advice and if needed the oncall exotics vet will come in.
I only went to the lecture - I have not brought my guinea pigs in so I cannot comment on the care. Dr. Strunk was very nice but be warned: she's developed an allergy to guinea pigs and wears a mask and gloves when treating them. From their bios it looks like maybe Dr. Brown as done more research on guinea pigs. You can access their bios on the web site: http://www.rbvh.net/

Update Northeast Houston

Animal Hospital of New Caney should be taken off the list. Dr. Beverly Wilkinson moved to a different clinic, and Dr. Christopher Monarski moved to Arizona to be a surgeon (lucky Arizonans). The last time I checked, New Caney didn't have an exotics vet on staff.

I have taken my pigs to Dr. Melissa Michels. She is very caring and I trust her opinion completely. The office call fees are very reasonable. I haven't had the need for any surgical procedures so I can't comment on that. I did mention to her that I have gained alot of my knowledge from a guinea pig website...and she said, "Was it Guinealynx?" I was very happy that you have been so well received by her.

I called this clinic today and was told that Dr. Michels has moved to Corpus Christi, Texas. Just thought I would let you know.

If you get an address for her, please let us know. I take it that practice still sees guinea pigs?

I do not have a new address for Dr. Michels in Texas.

However, I did take my pig in today to see another vet at Camel West Animal Hospital and both doctors in the practice seem very up on the latest in guinea pig care. They gave my pig, Henry, a very through evaluation with palpatation of his jaws and looking at his teeth with a scope. Then they took x-rays and determined that his teeth were not overgrown. In fact, the Dr I saw (a new to the practice doctor named Dr. Thoma) showed me some x-rays of a healthy guinea pig jaw and mouth and a guinea pig with overgrown teeth that were in a recent issue of a small animal vet dental magazine-looking publication. He took his time while showing the x-ray picture in the article and explained what he was looking for with Henry. Then he showed me Henry's x-rays.

It was determined that Henry had an abcess on his jaw although he could not determine what had caused it. Dr. Thoma drained it with a syringe. The doctor gave me a liquid form of Baytril (since another non-cavy experienced vet (at Alta Vista Animal Hospital in Phoenix) that I saw over the weekend gave me a tablet of Baytril that was cut up for me to dissolve into water and give--what a pain!) Anyway, Dr. Thoma also gave me 5 days worth of Metacam for pain relief and a package of Oxbow's Critical Care to feed him until he feels better. Have a follow-up for two weeks scheduled and the office said that they will call me in a couple of days to also check up on him.

As Brianna said in the original message the fees were very reasonable I thought--only $ 186.40 for everything (exam, anesthesia, 2 dental x-rays, subcutaneous fluids, the Critical Care packet, the Metacam and the Baytril. (Much cheaper than the local Emergency Animal Hospital!)

Vet tech said that they see guinea pigs on a regular basis although the number of guinea pig patients went down slightly since Dr. Michels left to Texas about 8 months ago.
I was very happy with them and feel that they know what they are doing. Here is their info again:

Camelwest Animal Hospital
5502 W. Camelback Rd. #1
Glendale, AZ 85301
623-934-1272

Dr. McCready (sorry did not get her first name) has been their for many years and I was told by the vet tech that she has a lot of experience with guinea pigs although her primary specialization is birds.

Dr. Thoma (is new to the practice) was the one I saw today.

Hope this is helpful--I know this info certainly has helped me as the only other recommended guinea vets in the area are 50 miles away from me on the other side of town!

STATE/PROVINCE: NEW HAMPSHIRE

Name: Fisherville Animal Hospital
Address: 108 Fisherville Road, Mall at Fisherville
City: Concord, NH 03303
Phone Number:Phone 603-229-0674
Website: http://www.fishervilleanimalhospital.com/

Personal experience: I dealt with an unknown health illness, so we ran a thorough diagnostic test, everything but the kidneys or something, and then went into teeth work. Dr. Messenger is the main guinea pig vet, and while practicing, continues to do research, and learn about what others are working on, staying up to date. He is also very open to trying new things. He has a plethora of guinea pig specific tools, and a very interesting book of xrays, that really make identifying what is in a guinea pig xray easy.

MASSACHUSETTS

Dr. Karen Holmes
Windhover Veterinary Center
944A Main Street
Walpole, MA 02081
(508) 668-4520

Windhover had a huge turnover in staff about a year or two ago. So I haven't gone through any surgeries with Dr. Holmes, personally. However, she's knowledgable and very good to work with.
