Talishan, thanks for the link! Let's put it this way - my vet is closer than any of the Tractor Supply stores. I think I'm leaning towards Revolution just because it will work faster. Does it matter if I use that on Apples, and Ivermectin on the other pigs, since they show no symptoms and it's not as urgent, and it will be cheaper that way?

Not at all. It's dosed differently, so just make sure you give the right dose of the right stuff to the right pig(s). Otherwise, it doesn't matter.

Okay, I just called my neighbor who has a horse to ask where she gets Ivermectin. She uses the 1.87% paste from the tack shop, so I can get that for Snickers and Sugar. But, she also happened to mention that she has Revolution for her cat, and I am welcome to use it. Is there some special kind of Revolution for pigs, or would the cat variety be the right one? If so, how much do I use for a pig? Is it safe to use the Revolution w/o a vet's assistance?

Oh, good job asking the neighbor!!

I don't know anything about Revolution vs. Ivermectin.

Here's Lynx's info on it https://www.guinealynx.info/antiparasiti ... revolution

Read that link; it sounds like the cat Revolution is just the thing you want. If you can get your friend's Revolution, go for it! A needled syringe would come in handy for drawing it out of the foil ampule.

"I think she may also have something else going on with her skin (althought it could all be mite related),"

Keep in mind that if she has mites that bad, she may have scratched herself into one or more secondary skin problems. She may now also have a bacterial infection or fungal infection, since her skin has been compromised from the mites.

That's what I am dealing with on Henry now. I'd get the parasites killed off, then focus on getting the skin healthy with possibly oral antibiotics and/or anti-fungal shampoos, etc. I found that Paravati's suggestion of Epi-soothe Shampoo and conditioner is what has helped Henry's dandruff and hair loss symptoms the most.

The Metacam is also a very, very good idea. I agree with what others have said--this will cause no permanent harm and we all miss stuff sometimes.

Especially if you're caring intensively for another one, it's very easy to overlook stuff on another.

Where would I get the Epi-soothe shampoo? I decided to compromise - I'm taking her to my "second choice" vet this afternoon. He sees pigs occasionally, but he's not a specialist. He's 10 minutes from me, and is fine for basic stuff. Although the extent of her mites is serious, mites are mites, and I know he can handle it. I also would like to see if I can get some Metacam for her so she doesn't use up all of Snickers', and I'll see if he will suggest Revolution, so a vet visit will probably be the best way to go.

I wouldn't wait for him suggest Revolution, but would maybe call and say you want to bring her in for a dose of Revolution, and then be sure to print and take in the info on Revolution just in-case he isn't familiar with it.

You might want to print off some of the Mites Info too? I have read many accounts on here of people who took their pigs into vets only to have the vet say there was no indication of mites and didn't treat them. I wouldn't want you to waste your money. :s

I agree that you want to be proactive with your suggestions, not wait for him to suggest it.

I do have the info printed out to take along, and when I made the appointment I told the receptionist that I had a severe case of mites (not me, my pig), with severe hair loss, and I needed to get in today. There is NO question she has mites, and needs treatment. I'm going to tell him that I had planned on treating on my own with Ivermectin, but I prefer that she gets treated with Revolution instead, as she clearly needs results NOW. This vet is okay with pigs. My complaint with him has only been that he is not proactive enough, but if you saw Apples' hair, you'd see that there is no way he would say there is no evidence of a problem. When I need x-rays, ultrasound, or a diagnosis (like with Snickers), I always go to the specialist, but I really think this guy can handle this. Believe me, if I'm not comfortable with what he has to say, I'll speak up.

Sounds like you're on top of things! I have no doubt you'll get her treated! Hope she feels better very soon.

Are you still going to get the Ivermectin and treat the rest of your pigs? I think you can use Revolution and Ivermectin together but days apart. I think Mum and Klynne were the ones doing both?
