I've used then quite a few times to check teeth while pigs are under anestesia or the ones that would tolerate it here at home. I haven't had an issue of anything getting stuck, but I could see if you are using them on a pig that is struggling how it may happen.

Wow, Mum that's not so good. I've had my pads for years but haven't needed them so far to be honest. I haven't heard through the CCT or BAR of any problems arising from use of the pads as yet. This is a link to the BAR gallery showing them in place. They run various guinea pig courses in conjunction with the CCT.

buccal pads in place

They've never added additional cushions to any of their pads but I can see how it may be softer. I can only suggest to try and get a hold of Vedra again as she knows the pads I ordered were for yourself.

Here's a picture of them after they were removed. They had to be cut, and you can see that the small one, that was stuck in both sides of the mouth, is actually uncurled, indicating it was seriously caught on something:

Of course, she now has abscesses on both sides of her face (discussed in another thread).

The small one on the left is the one that was inserted horizontally and stuck on both sides. The slightly bigger one on the right is the one that was meant to be inserted vertically. Stupidly, I used one end of it to try and pry out one of the sides of the other one that was stuck, and it ended up sucked down into the same place.

The small one has much thinner wire -- I can see how that could be sharp and pointy enough to pierce the skin. I am just so sorry this happened.

You'd used these things on other pigs, right? I have not yet put up a warning on the separator page but I feel I should.

No, this was the first time I'd used them. I was going to check Spot's mouth - thank goodness I didn't.

Personally, I'd never touch these things again, although I would make the one's discussed elsewhere, using the rubberized coating.

The instructions only showed a pig wrapped in a towel. They said to insert the small one closed, and then open it horizontally in the pig's mouth. I did that, and it worked - it pulled the buccal pads out of view. I had trouble getting the top ones in, because I hadn't figured out the angle, so I went to remove the bottom ones (the top ones weren't in) to look at them again and see if they were maybe upside down (it said nothing about orientation of the curly pieces).

I have yet to contact Vedra with all that's been going on.

I think there should be a very strong warning on the page. Since rosemary smyth experienced something similar, this doesn't seem to necessarily be a freak accident.

I should add that this pig does seem to have a very small mouth - although she's a pretty big pig. I notice that when I'm handfeeding, I can't get the syringe into the side of her mouth easily, because she doesn't have a big space there.
