| If it is glaucoma causing the blindness, that is extremely painful. I would have that checked. He may even regain some sight with treatment if the disease is not too far progressed.

I am going to pick up his medicine refill at the end of the week, so I can talk to the vet/techs then and see if they think I should bring him in. But he doesn't seem like he is in pain. He's happy, just a bit confused.
Are there any other signs of glaucoma?

| As far as I know, the only way to check for glaucoma is with the air puff/pressure reading test. You may need a veterinary opthamologist.

| I asked about Spinel's blindness when I picked up his meds today and I asked if I should bring him in. They told me just to keep an eye on him. As long as he's eating and pooping fine, with no discharge from his eyes or signs of pain that he should be fine. They feel it's most likely old age.

Spinel gone down and fast. I have no clue why.
Friday and Saturday he was fine. Sunday morning he looked a bit odd (not so perky) but I thought it was just another one of his moods. He ate a carrot when offered one so I thought nothing of it.
Sunday night he wasn't too interested in veggies and wasn't too active. But that's happend before so I figured he'd eat them in the night like normal.
He didn't eat them. He won't eat anything aside from a few mouthfuls of water.
I've been syringe feeding him. He wouldn't eat mash but he did take some water and some watered down apple sauce. (I figured it was better then nothing.)
He's drooling a lot. He's never done this before. Last check up Dr. Munn said his teeth were excellent.
Now he makes a little cough gulp when I try to syringe feed him and at random. He drools more when he does this.
I'm really afraid I'm going to lose him tonight. I have no clue what I should be doing. I don't know if hand feeding will make this better or worse. And being a holiday I have no one to call to figure out what to do for him. The soonest I can get him into the vet is Thursday.
Has anyone had this happen before? What's the best thing to do for him?

So sorry, Sabriel MoonStar. I don't know what your best options are given your vet is not available. Is there anyone on call you could phone for advice? Do you have emergency vets available that are familiar with guinea pigs?
You know how important keeping food moving through the system is. If you have any pain medications, they could help.

I don't have any pain meds on hand. And I'm not all that sure of how good the emerg. vet around here with small animals.
Slap maxwell has been helping me on IM. I figured my best shot for experience was here.
I guess I'm just going to have to keep hand feeding him and hope it's the right thing to do.
I'm going to call my vet in the morning to make his appointment. Hopefully they will have some advice then. I just hope he makes it through the night.

I'd definitely keep feeding him as long as he's swallowing.
If you have any subcue fluids, I'd give those too.
I hope he comes out of this - I feel so badly for you.

| Should I give sub fluids if I can get water in him orally? I really don't want to stress him out anymore then I have to.

If he won't chew on the syringe, then you can't handfeed.
I'm so sorry.
All I can suggest is to get him to the vet as soon as it opens.
And yes, I would give him a subcue of 30ccs lactated ringers.

I just wanted to post that Spinel Sun has passed on. He passed this morning around 11 AM.
I don't know what to say. I'm sure the words will come latter.
I'm looking into creamating him right now.
My poor Spinel Sun. I miss you so much already.

It's just unthinkable. Calling all the Pet Loss centres for services. Finding him a nice box. And stupid little things like finding sculpey for his foot prints. It doesn't feel real. I keep thinking I should wake up and find him in his cage like always.
What's the worst is that he lived in his own cage. I don't know how I'll ever take it down though I know it will help me stop looking for him in it.

I am so sorry for your loss of precious Spinel Sun. He was so lucky to have been with you and to have had a nice life with you.
God Speed Spinel Sun. You will be missed.
