I know Flagyl(sp?) is a great med for intestinal parasites like Giardia. It clears up diarrhea really well.

Try and find out the name of the med BB got. Ask the vet about trying Flagyl.

I have found the name of medicine - panacur. The dosage should be 0.18 instead of 0.12ml. The vet said this drug is fairly safe and widely used.

Hope this information will be useful.

http://www.icomm.ca/~dragon/parasite.htm

This site has info on Flagyl and Panacur. Panacur is a dewormer for one thing.

Has your vet tried Flagyl?

FLAGYL (Metronidazole): Note that it is effective against Flagellates, protozoans and anaerobes when given in the proper dosages.

PANACUR (Febendazole): Do note that it is mainly effective against Nematodes.

I have visited 2 vets.

The previous vet did consider flagyl but give up to use the medicine because nothing was found in the stool and even after the culture.

The second vet is an exotic specialist. He only consider to use Panacur when he first found the parasite in the stool.

Well if they ain´t nematodes it might not work.

The fact that the parasite is a relative to giardia would indicate Flagyl might very well work since that drug is first in the line of defense against giardia.

To pay safe, I will ask the vet to do one more examination on the stool end of this week.

To further elaborate, the stool is in good shape but a bit soft. BB has very good appetite and drinks normally (she consumed a lot of water when she had the diarrhea / parasites). I can only comment that there is very slow improvement. However, BB is doing better and better. I can tell from the brightness of her hair and weight.

I will post the result of stool examination after seeing the vet. Where possible, I will ask the name of the parasite last found in the stool.

Lastly, piggymom, is Neo doing better now?

If she´s getting better then it must be working. I wouldn´t worry about a stool sample in that case.

Gizmo and his sister carmella are doing fine i was very lucky, they are eating and drinking and playing around, and their stool is formed and solid. thanks again all .

I have brought BB to the vet Saturday.

The good news is : BB recovers totally. i.e. no need to rely on any medicine. The bad thing is her gut becomes allergic. This is also the reason for the soft stool. Nevertheless, the vet comments this is acceptable, as long as the stool is formed and good in shape. She increases the weight to 990g. (BB is a fat girl and weighed 1050g before.)

Taffeta, the diabetic, has chronically soft stool. It´s oversized and tends to squish easily, but her health is fine(knock wood) and it´s probably just a side effect of Diabetes.

Is Flagyl administered by a Vet or can you buy in Pet Stores? My vet is out of town and my piggy needs something to help his diarrhea. I was able to get some poop from a healthy pig and will try that tonight.
Thanks,

Sunder, I answered you on the thread regarding "very loose stools" Yes, Flagyl is by prescription only.
