I have a male guinea pig who is about 7 months old. His testicles (so I think) started to show a few weeks ago. But it only feels like one. I've read on how to feel the shaft under the skin directly above genital area and how to extract the penis, I just thought I was doing it wrong so I was kinda worried to weather or not he was in fact a male. Then his testicle started to show, so I didn't worry anymore. I went to the pet store to have a girl show me how to extract the penis properly b/c I've tried it recently and still can't do it. I watched her do it on a young male there and she let me try it myself. It was as easy as it sounded.
So, I came home and tried it on my male, a couple of times. I don;t know what the deal is, it's def not coming out! I'm not sure what in the world is going on. There seems to be something wrong with this picture, PLEASE tell me what to do!
I also have two females that I took to the vet today under the assumption that they may be pregnant from being around my male for a while now, off and on. They're def NOT pregnant.
I called and left a message at the office about my male, after coming home from the pet store and finding all of this out. But I know my vet is not going to have an appointment until 2 wks from now, at least.
Please help :(

Kermie831 Oh, the fatness!

Keep him away from the ladies, just in case he is a girl.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptorchidism
We had a little girl/boy named Diane. Bilateral cryptoorchid. No penis would pop, no testicles. He lived with his brother who was neutered, because he was a 'girl'! Well, when we adopted them at 2 years old, they started fighting - so I separated them and put the 'girl' in with my other ladies. A few weeks later I look and @#$%^ he had testicles. Vet said he should be infertile... He got neutered the next week anyway. But it was too late. 'Should be infertile turned into, 2 litters of pups later, 1 c-section and we lost those pups.

Hi masoto!
I am so sorry I have no advice to offer as I am not sure what the problem might be.
Can I ask why you need to extract the penis? Is he peeing by himself?
I had a little boy guinea pig for 4 years and didn't have to deal with any extracting of the penis. He got an infection there once, but then it was poking out for all to see so I had more of an issue getting it back in!
Can you post pictures of what is worrying you exactly?

Oh maybe I'm being a bit dense (not surprising) are you trying to make sure he is a boy?
Sorry.

I just need to make sure he's a male...or female, whichever, I need to know. I have a male friend waiting for him (foster mom said she could wait another week) but, of course, I don't want to put them together if he is in fact a she.
I'm going to check that web site you gave me kermie831, thanks for that.
I tried to take a pic, I'm sure it'd help to explain things but none of them came out very clear. (He really doesn't like to be turned onto his back, or anything close to it ) But I can post what looks the best.

this is the side where the lump is.

I'll try to get my husband to hold him tomorrow to take some more pics. I don't know if any of these will even help but, it's worth a shot I guess. What do you think?

| Don't worry about it slfalzone, not a problem. I just want to know what's going on myself. I just appreciate it that you took the time to care about my problem :)

Does look very much like a boy-like side. More, crisper pics (closeups of private parts) would be great for confirmation.
I have not run into females with abscesses that looked like that.

It's hard to tell from the pictures. Can you feel a shaft under the skind directly above his/her genitals?
Also, you can turn his bum 'inside out'. A lot of times when I do that for my male with impaction, his penis will pop out.
Anyone correct me if I'm wrong.

Okay, so, I took another pic w/my camera. The pics I posted last night, I had to take w/my phone (which is probably why they turned out looking like his fur was brownish. It's really black but if you look closer, it has a lighter tint underneath. IDK)
theamazingbox- No, I cant feel a shaft at all above the genitals. And I don't know if this makes a difference but he's very sesitive about anyone touching on or around his genitals. My females arent like that and my friend told me that her males never were either (they passed away :( )
I'm also posting one thats sorta blurry, just in case it helps. I have searched and searched the internet and have read almost everything I could possibly read (I know this isn't true) about guinea pigs and genitals. Feel free to post links if you think there's something I might have missed, and I'm sure I have.
Anyway, here are the pics

Like I said in the pic, there's a little raw spot on the inside there, on the left where the lump is.

| oh, yeah. I forgot to ask, do boars spray urine onto other GPs like I know females do?

What type of camera do you have?
It looks like a boy in the first pics but then it looks like a girl in the last one. Can you take the pig to an experienced vet or cavy rescue to verify gender?

| yeah, I think thats what I'm gonna have to do. I guess it might be one of those things that you really have to examine. So, I'm guessing that you guys understand why I'm so confused. There's a girl that works down the road who may be able to guess which sex he...or she is. She used to show guinea pigs. I still need to take him in to see the vet but I know it'll be a little while. For one, He'll be out of town until the middle of next week. And two, I just took my 2 females this week so it cost me a little more than I had expected. I'm gonna have to wait until I get paid again.

| I cant find a cavy rescue close to me. I think the nearest one is 100+ miles away. I live in NC, do you know of any in NC, near or around charlotte? I'm towards that way.

Not to be an alarmist, but I would try hard to get him/her to a vet right away. Whichever sex this piggy is, a tender lump could mean a dangerous infection or other very serious problem such a hernia. At the very least, it's probably quite uncomfortable. At the worst, it could be something deadly.
I agree with sus that the first pictures look like male, but the new closeups look female.
