Robutussin for guinea pig?
Hi. My 3 year old female piggy is currently under the care of a guinea pig vet for a respiratory infection. She is on her second week of Baytril and probiotics.
At the first visit the vet recommend that she might need more than two weeks on meds.
She is lively, eating and drinking well, but this morning I found her very congested.
I have her with vapor rub and steam right now. Her vet is out until tomorrow so for today I wanted to do something more for her to keep ahead of this problem.
I read that guinea pigs can be given 1/8th ts of Robutussin DM cough syrup to help loosen chest congestion. Anyone know if that is true?
Tomorrow I'm going to talk to her vet about a diuretic and adding Doxy or Enrofloxacin to the Baytril. Thanks in advance for any info on the Robutussin.

I wouldn't use vapor rub or human cough meds on a guinea pig. It isn't safe. Esp. if they are already on baytril.
What type of bedding are you using? Has she had an x ray to check her heart and lungs?

. Hi sus4rabbitsnpigs. Thanks for the reply. The vet did not do a chest x-ray. She is bedded on towels that get changed twice a day.
She had a slight cough from the time she came home from the pet store. I thought it was just from dusty hay until she recently got congested. The vet said that most piggies at pet shops will be exposed to a lung problem that will at some time manifest into a problem.

Pet store pigs are from breeding mills and backyard breeders - they are usually sick but it is likely she may have congenital heart issues.
It sounds like she was sick from purchase. Is the pet store paying the vet bills?
I'd get an x ray to see what is going on.
You should adopt from a rescue or shelter next time.

She is being treated at Avian and Exotic in Hawthorne. I already left a message and hoping someone does call back today.
My experience in emergency hospitals is that they have clueless vets when it comest to Guinea pigs and they will still try to treat the animal. In the end it is tons of money and you are lucky if they don't kill your piggy.
That is why I'm waiting to the vet that knows what he is doing.
She is eating, and even pop corning every now and then. and drinking. I'm keeping a close eye tho.
