Hello Pinta, you recently responded to my post regarding leukemia, and I need some more advice. I took Candy to the new vet, who is a specialist in exotics, and she at first didn´t think another blood test was needed. I since had the results from the first vet sent over to her, and she now says to have another test and a blood smear to make sure. She said the lymphocites part of the white blood cells were very high. Is that what your situation was too?
If it turns out to be leukemia, what kinds of treatments and meds are available, and did they
help your piggie? Please tell me what I should do. By the way, what part of the country are you in, Maybe my vet would need to contact someone there since around here in Pennsylvania they don´t seem to know a lot about piggie leukemia. Thanks, and please keep in touch, I will too. Gary.
Pinta, please answer...
Gosh, I can´t remember what her blood test results were. It was a few years ago. We tried chemo and Prednisone. She did do very well and showed improvement but the blood drawing necessary to work out each phase of treatment proved to be too much for her and she died 3/4 of the way thru treatment from shock after a blood drawing.
She was never in pain during treatment. Since then there have been advances in treatment and I know Sharlene, whose email was listed, has nursed a few pigs with leukemia. Your best bet is to contact her. She´s a vet tech and very experienced with cavies.
I´m on the West Coast as is Sharlene and Josephine.
