Hello there I had to take my piggie to the vet a couple of days ago as relised that she had lost weight as she was 1 kg and when I noticed her weight was down to 580grams. I took her to my vet that is specialises on Guniea pigs and he told me she needed a dental and he did the dental today and then when he had her under he told me that she has broken one of her premolars. And I would like to know that if she has broken a premolar he has done a dental to get the other teeth filed back then will that premolar that is broken to the gum line grow back and if so will that cause her problems with her teeth getting overgrown all the time????

As I have had to pay $550 to her her dental done. But the vet said that she was still eaten abit strange but she was able to take a few bites out of a carrot but she was still eatting slower then a normal piggie. You thoughts would be very appreciated.

Thanks Tessa

Teeth continually grow. I do not know the precise reason your guinea pig's problems happened. You might want to read over the information on the teeth pages:
www.guinealynx.info/teeth.html

If the root is not damaged, the premolar should continue to grow. You need to weigh her daily and hand feed as necessary. Encourage eating hay, as that will help keep the teeth the proper length. An xray can show if there is any type of infection (did the vet do a dental xray?).

The amount of weight loss you describe is extreme. You will need to do all you can to get food into your guinea pig to help her recover. I would not count on her being able to eat enough to maintain weight. Sometimes it takes a while for a guinea pig to be able to eat enough. Pain medication following a planing can help.

Hello the vet has told me that she may not chew to grind done her teeth the right way and she may have ongoing problems as she has lost a premolar tooth. The vet hasn’t done a X-ray but after the dental he did put her on antibiotics just in case there was any infection where she lost her tooth.

But is it true that if she has lost her tooth that she will have ongoing dental issues. And her teeth won’t go out of alignment due to missing her premolar!!

Teeth grow continuously. I hope there was no infection and it regrows.

Hello there after my female Guniea pig had dental I am finding that she is having problems eating hay and I find when I put a little bit of hay in her mouth to help her she moves her mouth around like it's getting stuck. Has anyone got any ideas on how to help her her back to eating hay again??
And when she did have her dental done the ver told me she has lost one of her premolars and I am not sure of that is why she can't ear the hay?

Please help ASAP!!

The vet thinks that her premolar won't grow back! And if the roots of her lost teeth are no longer there then can the mean that not won't grow back or is there a food chance that it will grow back!

It sounds like you will need to hand feed her. See the link I posted above.

My guess is that the vet trimmed her front teeth too short, and that's the reason why she can't eat. Try cutting things into short slivers, like matchsticks, and putting them in her mouth toward her back teeth. If she can chew and eat once the food gets back to the molars, she'll be able to eat again by herself when her front teeth grow out a little.

I find that she is able to eat parsley storks and the leaves bit when not comes to grass or hay then I put some in her mouth and push it near her back they then she just starts drooling and she opens her mouth ota like it's getting stuck.

She is able to eat tomato fine and corn cob and she can bite into carrot. I don't know if she will have to be put to sleep if she can't ear hay or grass cause her premolar is not there and we are not sure if it will.frow back or not,

Have you started hand feeding?
www.guinealynx.info/handfeeding.html

Pain medication can also help. I would call your vet this morning.

You might also see if she'll eat Critical Care or a pellet mash if you put a blob of it on a plate.
