I ran across this article on disasters and chickens. If you read through it, you can pick and choose what makes sense to you (I wouldn't have thought of making sure nothing could fall on them in the coop):

Well. The storm that rolled through overnight was way worse than the one earlier yesterday evening. Very heavy rain and high winds. No tornadoes for our immediate area, but as with the previous storm, many others in Missouri weren't so fortunate.

The barn is old, but it is fairly solid. It has metal siding and a pretty strong frame on a cement pad. There's really not much inside the coop that can fall. The ceiling is low too, so unless it takes a direct hit from a tornado strong enough to rip it off of the foundation or tear it apart, anything inside will probably survive.
