Glucosamine/cystease supplements
Penelope has been having reoccurring bladder issues. She is currently dealing with a bout of sludge and an uti. The vet also noticed a little arthritis in her back and hips.
She gets the oxbow joint and urinary supplements but they don’t do a whole lot in my opinion. I’m wanting to get her started on a glucosamine supplement that will help both her bladder issues and arthritis. I’ve seen people recommend the Johnson’s 4joints liquid but it seems I can’t get that to the United States. I’ve also seen Feliway Cystease but seems to be the same issue. I’ve looked and haven’t found much for the United States that is similar to the ones I mentioned.
Does anyone have pigs on her that get supplemented with glucosamine? Thank you.

Not commenting on the use of the drug but instead suggesting you look at the active ingredients and dosage information on the other two products (there are usually images online or descriptions in stores that include more info) and compare it to any human or veterinary similar products. My guess is you can find something similar to do the job.
Asking your vet about this and getting a recommendation might be a good move too.
Have you read over the stones page? There is dosage info for shilintong that might help.
Was bacteria found in the urine?

That’s a good idea. It will take some time but hopefully I can find something similar. I have also emailed the vet to see if they could recommend an exact one.
Yes, there was quite a lot of bacteria in her urine this go around. She’s been struggling with reoccurring UTI’s and she has also quite a bit of sludge with it. The vet & I were thinking the sludge may be what caused her uti and the inflammation in her bladder. Her poops have no gone soft despite consistent probiotics. She was almost done with her second course of Bactrim but I stopped two days earlier due to the poops recommended by the vet. However, I think she still may have the uti so will probably be getting back on it. It’s definitely been a roller coaster ride!

Here is what I found

You want any version you go for to contain glucosamine, MSM (methyl-sulphonylmethane) and chondroitin as the three key active substances.
'Minerals and trace amino acids' in the Uk version correspond to the manganese and hyaluronic acid that are listed in the US versions.
Here is (per 5 ml) what is in the UK extra strength product (key ingredients) so you can see what roughly comes closest:
Ingredients. Composition (per 5ml): Glucosamine Hydrochloride 200mg, Methyl Sulfonyl Methane 100mg, Chondroitin Sulphate 75mg. Analytical Constituents (per 100g): Protein 2.0g,, Fibre 1.2g, Ash 0.8g, Fat Trace.
We recommend 0.4 ml once daily of the UK version for a 1 kilo piggy.
4Joints Mobility Extra Strength Liquid For Dogs - 100ml | Johnson's Veterinary | Pet Connection
It takes a little while to build up (so do not expect instant results) but it does really make a difference for my arthritic piggies to give them comfort and increased mobility for a bit longer.

I am currently (just got back from the vet) dealing with a 5,5 year old piggie with a recurring uti and possible arthritis so this topic was of interest. I had never heard of the 4joints stuff. All selling sites I could find did not list how much of what was in it. So glad I found the UK site with that information.
I found a Dutch product that is pretty similar so will be buying that.

I would have loved to be able to get the 4Joints liquid but seems to be near impossible in the states unfortunately.
I did find the cat cosequin capsules that I may use. Was really hoping I could find a liquid as it seems to be easier to administer/and less of a dosage but all the liquid ones I found had a lot of inactive ingredients that didn’t seem to good for pigs.
Sardonic- what Dutch product did you find? It’s similar to the 4joints?

I am giving 0.3ml and that is pretty similar to the 0.4ml dosage of 4Joints
(There are some pictures on the UK-site for products in the US that should be similar to the 4Joints, but these pictures are from 2023, the products may not exist anymore)
