I would like to recommend my vet Katherine Baine, DVM, DABVP (Avian). She recently finished her 3 years residency under Dr. Greenacre at the UT exotics department and has since opened her own avian and exotics service at the Animal Emergency and Specialty Center in Knoxville. I personally brought her my special guinea pig Fiona to have her spayed because of an ovarian cyst she had. Dr Baine performed an ovariectomy via flank approach and when my piggy woke from surgery, she got up and acted like nothing even happened! We also have an emergency service that is trained to stabilize our exotic pet friends and have the ability to consult with Dr Baine if the case is serious.

Dr. Greenacre is a small animal/ exotics veterinarian. She has helped me with both Bob and Oreo (boars, 6 and 1 1/2 respectively). Bob had a pretty big bladder stone. She examined him, did the surgery, and handled him after the surgery. His surgery went extremely well, the suturing was literally the best I have ever seen (just a small line, subcutaneous sutures, and never had any drainage or bleeding). Oreo had, and still does have, a nerve problem although he's in little pain. Dr. Greenacre was also great with him. She brought in specialists to look at him (only cost an extra $30), did various tests, and admitted she no longer knows what to do: I respect when someone admits this. She is VERY thorough and VERY knowledgable. Willing to learn and explain things to you.
I would be willing to also try her collegues at the clinic. The school has great resources, and various specialists which is very convenient.
There is also an emergency clinic after 4:30; the only one nearby which has vets that can handle small animals.

Drs. Booth [moved: see below] and Pope both see piggies, as well as ferrets, chinchillas, rats, hamsters, rabbits, etc. They spay and neuter small animals, also. Dr. Booth [moved: see below] spayed one of my rats, and Dr. Pope trimmed the teeth on one of my piggies. Both doctors also treated my GP's for mange, as well as helping my elderly pig with arthritis and eye ulcers.

Unable to verify clinic. Dr. Pope might now be working at All Creatures Pet Hospital, if this is the same person.

    • I've used Dr. Booth for years when she was with Dr. Pope. She just recently moved to this Banfield location. I trust her with general care of my girls even though I HATE the idea of walking through Petsmart to get to her. Just make sure you see her, another vet is supposed to be added and I highly doubt she'll know anything about cavies.

    • Dr. Booth used to be at Pope Animal Clinic, also in Memphis. She's a wonderful Vet, and great with piggies and other small animals. Be warned though - Banfield is corporate owned and sometimes they restrict what the doctors can do and what meds they can dispense without exams and diagnostics.

Website verified: March 6, 2016; however, Dr. Booth is not listed as Staff on the website. There is a Dr. Barbara Booth at Foothills Animal Clinic in Forest City, NC, as of 2010, if this is the same person.

    Dr. Micheal Lutz, DVM
    990 Davidson Drive
    Nashville, TN 37205

1 hr drive from Clarksville, TN
2 hr drive from Paducah, KY
2 hr drive from Bowling Green, KY

I am VERY skeptical about Dr. Lutz's treatment for guinea pigs. He misdiagnosed mites as lice and told me to use flea powder on them for treatment, waving aside my arguments for Advantage and/or Ivermectin.

However, he is willing to spay/neuter, and has done a very successful spay on my mother's sow, JoJo. I am going to take my boar, Fieval, to him for a neuter. Spays/neuters are the only thing I will recommend Dr. Lutz for. Spay: $125. Neuter: $105.
